System boot up problems - HELP!

Okay, so I just pulled my old computer out from the corner it has been resting in for the past 8 months or so and decided to try and start her back up.
Anyway, first I plug everything back in like it should be set up and hit the power button and the fans all spin up and the lights come on and everything but then that's it - no display, no beep(s), nothing.
The hard drive light is constantly on though, so I'm guessing that the problem lies somewhere in there. I don't have another hard drive to test out or anything, so what are my options before just going out to get a new hard drive? AND is it the actual hard drive that is having the problem? I mean, if there is no display or ANYTHING (except for a small flash on the screen when pressing power) might it be something else, like the entire motherboard?

What do you expect the problem is and what should I try and do before giving up on the system altogether?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Step #1: Totally disconnect the hard drive. If it still doesn't get a bios screen, it isn't the hard drive.
Step#2: Remove every unnecessary component (pci cards, etc), reseat everything, clear the bios, and try again

also, make sure you have your speaker plugged into the board so you can listen for beep codes

Yeah, actually I did try that and still got the same bull crap, so I guess I need a new mobo probably. I wasn't aware that I should still be getting a bios screen even without hard drive connected though.

I was having issues with the system before I put it away which I thought were due to the motherboard anyway, so I guess it's time to upgrade. Beforehand I was getting lots of sound pops, a dvd drive that kept disappearing and ram having to be reseated as well. I think it's just time to maybe start again. Oh well.

It might be worth it to fool around a bit more, some of it might be RMA'able.... or you can send it to me and i can fool around with it!!!!

All you really need to get a post is:

MB, CPU, RAM, Power Supply, Vid card...thats it

So I guess it's probably the motherboard that's messed up now.

I mean if that was working and something else was at fault it should be giving me a series of beeps to let me know what else was wrong, right?
Oh well, I think it's time to upgrade and see what I can do with the limited funds that I have available.
