I was just wondering what kinds of degrees people with such jobs usually hold (or are sought by employers). Are these mostly CS or MIS majors? Are they going to local community colleges that offer specific programs in those areas? Also, if employers do hire people with completely unrelated degrees, what kind of work experience is expected and what's a good way to go about gaining such work experience without prior work experience in those areas for someone who wants to get his foot in the door?

I'm neither, I went to school for business (I'm a sys admin).

To get your foot in the door with little-to-no experience you could always start where I did; entry-level user support...

really short version of the story...

I was pretty decent with technology to begin with (concepts came easy) and had started a web development company that eventually flopped (late '99); when the money ran out it was easy for me to pick up a "normal" tech job (helpdesk). With the tech knowledge I had from earlier & my business experience I was able to "advance" in the MIS world.

I've done other side business stuff along the way; some technical related and some not.

Not very glamorous, but gives you a general idea.
