They are going to put forth a proposal for the UN security council for the middle east to be a wmd free area.

I read this as well, it is all contingent on Israel getting rid of its 200 plus nuclear warheads, anyone want to wager on the chances of that happening? I can't blame them for wanting to keep them now, but if all the countries in the region sign, disarm and open themselves to weapons inspections, they would no longer need their WMDs. No one has a halo in that side of the world.

Thats just a pre-packaged attempt at an explanation for a vey complex problem. For centuries before the creation of Israel, there was no memorable conflict between Arabs and Jews, au contraire, Christians were persecuting Jews for ages. It's only with the violent creation of Israel backed by the US that these feelings have been fostered. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced from their homes and those who were left live in squalor. The hatred is against Israelis, they just happen to be Jews. If Christians or Hinuds or anyone attempted the same thing, the anger would be directed towards them as people not as a religion. It's just easier to sell this to the public as a conflict of religions with Christians and Jews on one side and Muslims on the other. Ironically most of the neo-conservative, pro-Israel Christians in the US forget that a significant percentage of the Palestinian population is Christian, including such notable figureheads as Hanan Ashwari, a Christian and a WOMAN.

Right, pretending that that was actually the case, what are we doing now? Awarding billions of dollars worth of contracts to companys from the US and coalition partners. How noble. And as I've mentioned a million times, any good intentions of the US are moot until we find WMD, until then, as far as the world is concerned, out only motivations were oil and Israel.

arab countries have been acquiring wmds as a "deterrent" to any israeli attack. they know that they wont be able to match israel with conventional weapons/military, so they have these, it's like they're saying "look, we know you can kick our a$$, but we will use these weapons and make you pay a high cost if you attack us."

even if israel were to get rid of their nukes (which they should, why do they need 200 of them?), they will still be able to beat anyone in the region with little trouble with just their conventional weaponry.

The Iraq fiasco has proven that the UN and any treaty or resolution it puts forth isn't worth the paper it's written on. They're un-enforceable and thus useless. I wouldn't leave the security of any country up to the "good will" of the UN. It's suicide. It's an obvious ploy to disarm and nueter Israel.
