DAMASCUS, Syria – Syria has forbidden the country's students and teachers from wearing the niqab — the full Islamic veil that reveals only a woman's eyes — taking aim at a garment many see as political.

The ban shows a rare point of agreement between Syria's secular, authoritarian government and the democracies of Europe: Both view the niqab as a potentially destabilizing threat.

"We have given directives to all universities to ban niqab-wearing women from registering," a government official in Damascus told The Associated Press on Monday.

The order affects both public and private universities and aims to protect Syria's secular identity, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue. Hundreds of primary school teachers who were wearing the niqab at government-run schools were transferred last month to administrative jobs, he added.

Syria may be authoritarian and unpleasant, but it is a secular country, and this is a good move.

Syria should be our greatest ally. Hama masscare wiped out all Muslim brotherhood in Syria and the Alawites don't put up with fundi bullshit. War Syria.

Since it's a Jedi thread - Israel could learn a thing or two from Syria.

Just curious about something - have you ever advocated peace?

Sure But like most people wanting peace you fail to recognize aggressors don't understand anything else but a ton of brick ass whoopin. Like a bully in HS if you hit him in the nose with a baseball bat he won't fuck with you or anyone else after that. Aggressors are essentially cowards and only understand one thing.

That`s a real food question...even though it was aimed at Zebo.....

I personally advocate peace.
Witht that said lets look a little closer.....
Whose definition of peace?
because there will be a winner and loser in this process that is called peace.
Some will say let the UN decide...
While others wiill say and truthfully I might add that the UN is nOt unbiased....
Other will say what about the poor palestinians?
I will say -- what about them?
You have Hamas and fatah and others who control that region of the world.
Yet they will never ever get together to take care of the Palesnian people!
Why?
Because to these groups and a "elected" government it is NOT about the Palestinian people it`s all about doing damage to israel...regardless of the past and regardless of your outlook on these group you know I am correct when I say --- if Hamas and Fatah and anyone else who is concerned about having a lasting peace could all agree, when that happens another group or groups will step up to the plate and start the BS all over again......

My issue with this is that those parents who might be fundamental might now take their daughters out of school rather than follow the new law. I think eduction can be invaluable against strict fundamental ideology. I guess you have to break a few eggs, hope it works out for them.

You assume they don't have compulsory education. I don't know but I don't assume either. Easily remedied if not like Ataturk had to do in Turkey when fundis tried keeping girls out of school for similar reasons.

If these people are such strong fundamentalists, then sending their kids to school isn't going to change them, particularly if those kids are women, who they aren't going to listen to anyway.

Besides which, how many chauvinistic fundamentalists would want to send their daughters to a university where they might be exposed to other cultures? None?

Reminds me of Robert Heinlein's quote about how raw, naked force has solved more problems than anything else in human history.

Every day European governments look more and more like these countries. Protect Roman Polanski as an esteemed guest like the Taliban protected Osama bin Laden. Shit on women's rights by protecting rapists. Shit on women's rights by mandating dress codes. Establishment of state religions. Establishment of state monarchies.

When will it end?

Establishing rigid state secularism is laudable. I'd march in the army to destroy worldwide religion any day.

I see this too and wonder if that's the reason for it, basically forces many women away from university now.

LOL
if israel does anything even remotely similar to banning any islam-related thing or another the entire world will start screaming "Genocide! Apartheid! Fascist-Zionism!" etc etc etc etc

hell, i'll bet Arabs in israel (and even some that are not israeli citizens) have more rights and freedom IN israel than in any other arab country.

Interesting report. I never thought of Syria as being secular. Perhaps Al Queda and the Taliban will have to target them now.

"The Europeans" haven't banned face veils.

In a FREE country, you should be allowed to dress the way you like.

In a fascist state, populist, racist politicians force you to dress according to a dreamt-up "cultural norm".

But yeah, let's ban jeans and T-shirts as well while we're at it. You down with that too, dawg?

So Polanski = OBL, now?

Way to over-generalize by the way. ALL OF EUROPE is NOT "protecting rapists".

Establishment of state religions. Establishment of state monarchies.
Not sure which country established any particular state religion recently, or a monarchy. All of that happened hundreds of years ago man...

You seem confused.

Good luck. Authoritarian regimes can shut down Islamic extremism easily. Saddam did it, for example, until it became politically expedient for him to add Allah is great to the flag.
