SYRACUSE UPSETS #1 UCONN!!!!!

Also, screw you George Washington for losing to Temple. You just HAD to play without your best player, didn't you? Now that's two bubbles that were burst today. I wanted this year to be the year of the mid-major at-larges. Now two of them are gone. Hopefully the MVC can still be a five bid league. It's almost certain that the CAA is only a one bid league this year (when there were talks of it being a three bid league).

I think Temple stole a bubble team bid by beating GW today more than Syracuse did by beating UConn.

Conference championships are probably the only times when I do not root for the underdog. It just seems wrong to me that a team as crappy as (for example) whoever will come out of the A-10 this year will be in the NCAA tournament. Take Oakland last year as an example. They had a losing record, but won their championship and got a bid. I want the best team from every conference to make the tourney. That's why I like the idea of just having a one game championship between the no. 1 and no. 2 teams in the conference to determine the champion, sorta like D-1A football for 12-team leagues.

My only consolation is that Syracuse is a good team that can take on any team in the country. They can make a run in the tourney, so they are worthy of being there. I just there were more mid-majors.

Best thing that could have happened for both teams. UCONN is still going to be a #1 seed, is going to be rested and is going to have a chip on it's shoulder, so they're not hurt at all. Syracuse needed that win to have at least a shot of making the tournament.

that win sealed the deal for them getting into the tournament.

I have no issues during conference championships when a team like Syracuse knocks out a powerhouse to give their resume that extra boost to make it into the tournament. I do have issue when a team like Oakland makes it "by default" especially since theoretically, they could have gotten the bid over another team that could have gone undefeated during regular season conference play and just slipped up during the tournament. The automatic bid in a power conference doesn't bother me as much as for the smaller conferences, because if you are going to win the ACC or Big East then you will have had to take down multiple ranked teams.

Why? Mid-majors are just walk overs for the power conference elites. You want Duke UConn and the like to be in the final four every year? They would if they had 3 games against mid-majors. GW, Hofstra and teams like that may win a game once in a while but they have no realistic chance at a final four or elite 8 for that matter.

I am consoled by the fact that Oakland came from a one bid conference (Mid-Con Conference), so they didn't steal a bubble spot from some team. I was ecstatic when Gonzaga held on to win the WCC over Loyola Marymount (Hank Gathers's spirit nonwithstanding) since that surely would have stolen a bubble spot. Instead of seeing a team like Maryland in the tourney, we could have seen Loyola Marymount....*barf*. It's the one-bid (or maybe two-bid) mid-major leagues with a true at-large teams that worry me the most (WCC, CAA, A-10, Patriot, WAC).

Ideally, the best 34 teams outside of conference champs get at-large bids. I believe that some of those mid-major teams are better than the bubble teams in the power conferences, and would provide a challenge to any team in the country. The balance of power in college basketball is more level this year. Prepare for the most exciting tournament ever.

In any respect, GW getting upset in the A-10 tourney doesn't help provide power conference teams a challenge in the NCAA tourney. I'm for two things:
1) Getting the best possible field in the NCAA tourney.
2) Promoting the respect of mid-major teams.

These two things are definitely not mutually exclusive.

I think mid-majors have received a lot of respect this year. Gonzaga has been highly ranked all year. Bucknell, Northern Iowa, George Mason, and Southern Illinois all have enjoyed some time in the Top 25 this year. You have to figure that will somehow translate into a few more bids come Selection Sunday. So I don't think there needs to be any more promoting of respect as they seem to have already gotten it.

this is the year to put money down on some of these 16 seeds...I an totally see a 16 seed knocking out any 1 seed this year...amoung other underdog happenings this year.

but low and behold Duke shall still prevail. Coach K lives for this time of year and JJ will shoot the lights out 😀

lol i love the "fan" pole on foxsports...Memphis is now #1 LMAO

Okay, you first. I'll happily take action on whatever #16 seed you care to wager on. Put up or shut up.

by far one of the most frustrating 'Cuse teams to watch in recent years. So much talent. Hopefully, they can put together a run in the Big Dance! Go 'Cuse!
