Newly diagnosed cases of syphilis among gay and bisexual men in the United Kingdom rose a whopping 1,412% from 1997 through 2002, according to a study in the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Most of the new cases were diagnosed in London and Manchester, researchers say. Among other groups, syphilis diagnoses rose 213% among straight men and 22% among women during the same time period. Researchers say many of the gay men diagnosed with syphilis also were coinfected with HIV. Many of the syphilis cases also were transmitted through oral sex, according to the study.

I wonder how many of these men knew that using a condom for oral sex would have prevented most of cases of transmission.

Oh, so it's not a big deal since syphilis is treatable IF it's diagnosed?

It's a known fact that all kinds of sexually related viruses and diseases are higher among gays. This is not surprising.

This issue has been hidden from the public for far too long. It's a extremely dangerous situation and needs to be at the forefront.

This article is a bit old, but still relevant. A few excerpts from the piece.

ATLANTA (AP) - Gay men too young to remember the earliest reports of AIDS are now spreading the disease at alarming rates that remind health officials of the explosive first years of the epidemic.

A government survey released Thursday shows 4.4 percent of gay and bisexual men ages 23 to 29 are newly infected each year with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The survey, timed to mark the 20th anniversary of the discovery of AIDS, is the government's most sweeping evidence yet of a resurgence in the disease among young gay men.

It suggests even more staggering infection rates for blacks in that group: 14.7 percent - one in seven - become HIV-positive each year.

Left unchecked, the infection rates for gay and bisexual men threaten years of progress the country has made to control the spread of HIV/AIDS, analysts for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

"The numbers we're publishing right now are more like the findings you see in the '80s than the findings you see in the '90s," said CDC's Linda Valleroy, who led the survey.

The study included nearly 3,000 gay and bisexual men who were tested anonymously for HIV from 1998 to 2000 in Baltimore, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Seattle.

Why do you do this over and over again?

I'm going to say 'comprehensive sex education, including the risks of sexual activity other than abstinence, along with the proper use and expected effectiveness of protective measures is the best way to prevent the greatest number of diseases and pregnancies'.

And you're going to ignore most of that and respond as if I've just said 'give them a bucket of condoms and tell them to go nuts'.

And if we both stay interested long enough, you will once again admit that prevention of disease and unwanted pregnancy is a secondary goal to reducing premarital sex in the world, which is actually the primary goal, because in the end, a lot of this comes down to religion.

You're never going to convince anyone that intentionally keeping information about birth control and it's risks and effectiveness away from people, in favour of telling them 'don't have sex before you're married' is going to be more effective, because it can't be; the effectiveness of condoms is just under 90% per year for pregnancy and most diseases (not, for example HPV) if used correctly (I'm not sure how many uses per year are assumed for that calculation). Considerably more than 10% (just look at rates in high schools in the American south, where abstinence education is quite popular) of your target audience is going to engage in sexual relations; if they know nothing of birth control, a very large portion of them are going to end up with infections or pregnancies. You are much better off encouraging abstinence, and teaching about protection, than demanding abstinence only, when you know you won't get it.
