synthetic gasoline

I had the idea that if synthetic oil exists, why can't one make synthetic gasoline. After a quick google search, apparently you can. It's too bad all the easy stuff has already been invented.

synthetic gasoline patent

Something equally interesting I came across was a little tidbit from here

"Hydrogenate carbon chains. Can make margarine or synthetic gasoline."

Apparently margarine and synthetic gasoline use the same base chemicals and similar manufacturing. :Q

It's nice to know though that there exists another source now for gasoline besides naturally occuring sources. Sure it's much more expensive, but in the event of another OPEC embargo situation, it might be possible to ramp up synthetic production and reduce costs.

its too expensive to be implemented on a large scale, IMHO hydrogen and electric powered cars is the way things are going to turn out

So why isn't fully synthetic motor oil hideously expensive? I mean, it is 2-5 times more expensive than dino, but if that's any indicator, it might be possible to produce synthetic gasoline at similar cost ratios.

Up here in Canada, fuel cut with alcohol from crops is subsidized byt the gov't and I buy fuel with 10% ethanol all the time. The octane is 89% versus 87% for the same price.

The germans produced a lot of synthetic oil and gas during WW2.

Yeah I was doing some skimming around and Germany has quite a history with synthetic petroleums. link

Castrol sells a compelling fully synthetic motor oil, it comes in 0W-30 only and it's a green color instead of the usual light brown/yellow. :Q😕 It's supposedly very good and meets stringent european automotive specs that many US market oils fail. It's imported from germany and has limited availability in the US.

No they don't. Castrol was sued by Mobil for using the word synthetic on their oil. Castrol is NOT 100% synthetic.

Castrol is for idiots that buy what ever the guy on TV says, same gos for Fram filters.

At anyrate, castrol dino is pretty widely used in imports without a problem.

I've thought of this lots before, also.

Of course, it's definately possible.. but just like synthetic oil, synthetic gasoline would be considerably more expensive than regular gasoline..

It's only advantage would probably be better for the environment.. and unfortunately most people aren't willing to pony up for such a "small" cause. 🙁

Yeah, the whole Castrol isn't synthetic thing is old news. I'm sure they've learned the error of their ways.

I highly doubt it's better than a quality product like AMSOil, Royal Purple, or Red Line, though.
