How do you tell the difference between perfect synthetic diamonds and flawless mined diamonds? Couldn't you buy the synthetic ones and resell them to a seller for big bucks?

i believe synthetic has high concentrations of radiation, though nothing you can tell w/ the naked eye...you have to look under some special thing and you see it glowing.

Synthetic diamonds are usually more expensive than mined diamonds, but you can make them into the shape you desire such as for oil drilling

I looked on some sites and it appears you can buy at 16 carat for $1200, I'm pretty sure that's cheaper than a mined 16 carat diamond.

all the major players in the synthetic market etch their stones with a unique serial number, so everyone knows their synthetic

But only because of artificial inflation.

ugly (I guess, I am not impressed by gems, so I may not be the best judge :)).

I don't understand what you're trying to say, but you can also get real diamonds like that.

You guys heard right.

You need a microscope that is very strong because you can only tell at a very high magnification. It's something along the lines of how the carbon molecules are organized.

And that amuses me too - a better looking carbon crystal, made in a lab somewhere by adequately paid workers is not as good as one mined in another continent by low-wage workers, and marketed through a monopolisitc corporation.

This year, give her graphite. Graphite is forever.
Graphite, the undiamond.
Graphite. It's carbon too!

Well, isn't it forever? They say words have great power, and what better way to write those eternal words than with a pencil?

They are awesome as far as I can tell (I am no diamond connesieur). However, my gf loves it and everyone tells me they look great, plus it comes with insurance in case the diamond falls out of the setting.

There are "synthetic" diamonds and there are diamond "simulants."

Synthetic diamonds are real diamonds that are grown in a lab/production facility. These are somewhat less expensive than from-the-ground diamonds and are generally colored stones (pink, yellow, etc.).

Diamond simulants are non diamond material that is made to look like diamonds. The website linked by MetalMat has these simulant/fake diamonds. Don't get me wrong, I think real diamonds are a scam, but don't fool yourself into believing that the "real thing" can be had for those prices.

The synthetic diamonds don't *have* to be perfect; they can introduce imperfections.
Other than the serial number, you can't tell the difference.

I read about this in an article in Wired. Apparently diamond companies are giving retailers equipment that helps them separate natural ones from synthetic.

It got me wondering - If you need special microscopes to tell the difference, aren't you getting your money's worth?

God, that's TACKY!

It is, but they make really good stuff. Not only that, but they called me throughout the order to let me know where it was at and gift wrapped it for me. I will order from them again in the future.

Yeah, I intentionally induce faults into my growths for exactly this reason. I also skip the whole serial number thing.

It's like printing money.
