I think the proper question is:

WHERE DO YOU FIND THESE WOMEN THAT WANT NON-DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS?

Synthetics may look better, but the natural ones are worth way more $ for sure.

But only because of artificial inflation.

And that amuses me too - a better looking carbon crystal, made in a lab somewhere by adequately paid workers is not as good as one mined in another continent by low-wage workers, and marketed through a monopolisitc corporation.

:Q:disgust:

This year, give her graphite. Graphite is forever.
Graphite, the undiamond.
Graphite. It's carbon too!

Well, isn't it forever? They say words have great power, and what better way to write those eternal words than with a pencil?

I don't understand what it is with you people and the low wage thing. Aren't your shirts and shoes made by similar people getting a low wage? They may be low wage compared to where you're from, but I don't think they would continue working where they are if they thought they weren't getting paid enough.

I've made that arguement before and nothing ever comes of it. After all the controversy over Nike's sweat shops a few years ago, I still see the swoosh everywhere.

The diamond industry has hurt parts of Africa but has also helped other parts. One diamond producing nation (can't recall which, but it was in the interior of Africa) uses the diamond money to fund FREE education for all citizens up thru PhD level studies. If you buy a diamond make sure it is certified and ask that the retailer only deals with suppliers that adhere to the Kimberly Process.

On the topic of synthetic diamonds, I have actually given this a lot of thought (as Im shopping for an engagement diamond right now). Sure, diamonds are a total scam, but so is what most people have to spend on their weddings. It is a once (hopefully) in a lifetime purchase so don't go synthetic just to save money. Now if you totally object to the diamond industry on a moral level then that is different. And if that's the case then get a man made diamond, not a fake (like MetalMat linked to). Ultimatly you need to ask your woman what she wants, because it needs to be something she is comfortable with. These are just the thoughts I've thought on the topic, so YMMV. Good Luck.

I got my wife a Ruby engagement ring, and she loves it. She likes to watch football too.

That's almost like in Denmark, except that we fund education with bacon.
