Syntax S635MP too much memory?

I planned on putting a computer in my car, and the free Syntax board seemed like it would do the trick. I installed XP Pro on it a few months ago and wound up sitting on the project while I got a new car. While checking to see if everything was up to date, I decided to up the memory from 512 to 1024 since I had an extra ddr stick around. When I powered up, I went to upgrade to SP2. It took hours upon hours to never complete (I couldn't wait forever!) Then I went to play an mp3 on it to test how everything was working, and it would play 2 seconds, pause 2, play 2. I decided to reinstall windows, which took longer then 12 hours. Installing Win98 on a different hard drive, same thing. Then it hit me, it's the memory. Took it out, installed XP and SP2 with no problems.

So now I wonder, why does the world come to a halt with 2 512 ddr pc2700 kingston sticks? Either stick in either of the 2 spots causes no problem, but put them together, and the brakes are on full force. Looking around, I don't see a BIOS update for this (in fact, I only see that one update was ever released.) Since this is going in my car, I will probably just leave it at the 512 and the issue is resolved, (and I'll save 28 watts), but I wanted to know if anyone has ever heard of this before or know of a fix. If I could add the additional memory, I would probably create a RAM drive to run stuff out of to make the system more responsive and not rely on the hard drive (and hopefully reducing the chance of bumps causing problems.)

Thanks!

What CPU do you have in there? There have been a few CPU models that couldn't cover more than 512 KBytes of RAM in their L2 cache.
