I am thinking about turning syntax s635mp motherboard as the basis for a htpc. What I like to do with the htpc is to run as a mp3 server connected to my audio system and also watch divx movies. From time to time I will use it to internet radio, too. The CPU is attached to the motherboard and is C3 800Mhz. From what I have experienced with the board it's sufficient in playing mp3's and playing the internet radio streams. Divx movies, however, it didn't play very well. As matter of fact, I'd say it's unwatchable. I have windows XP pro on this one with 512 meg of memory although I am willing to change the OS to something less bulky, but since I will control this computer remotely via wireless lan, I like to be able to access the computer remotely using MS remote desktop. If there is something better than MS remote desktop service, I appreciate knowing more about it. Which one is the limiting factor in playing back divx movies, the lack of CPU power or the poor performance of the on-board video? If it's the video, then I am willing to get a better pci video card (what's least that will run divx smoothly??), but if it's CPU, then I guess I will have to look for another motherboard.
I appreciate your help and if there is anyone who has tried this motherboard with pci video card, I would like to know if you succeeded in playing divx files.
