Synology or WD EX2?

boomerang

It's time to replace my WHS 2003 box.

I helped a friend set up his Synology DS213j. I found it to be a PITA. It didn't help that he's pretty computer illiterate and that I had to explain everything I was doing as I was figuring it out myself. It also didn't help that I did no research before helping him. But, it's up and running. He picked it out, so no blaming me. 🙂

Now WD has their EX2 out. It's new, with a few reviews out there and I'm trying to decide between the two.

I don't require a lot of storage. A two drive solution will be more than adequate. I will choose the mirror option.

I want to store files on it that are accessible from my LAN as well as the outside world.

I want to automate backups.

I don't have any need for a lot of bells and whistles from the software perspective. My needs are simple.

Thoughts?

Well you already learned how to use the Synology right? You might as well put that knowledge to use! :awe:

The low-end Synology's are pretty good boxes IMHO. They use the same software stack across the whole line, so you don't have to worry about any half-baked or quickly-unsupported software stacks like you do with some of the bigger players who cycle product teams like they change shirts.

That's not to say that the WD won't do the job, I'd just pick the Synology for the more mature software stack and better add-on ecosystem.
