going to pick up 10 of these hard drives (2 will be spare replacements)

HGST 4TB Touro Pro - External

going to crack open those external enclosures and use the hd inside for the NAS. reason why i'm doing this is because for some reason, the external drives are cheaper then just buying the internal component...weird

i ended up tearing all the 4TBs apart and was very satisfied with what i did. I now have 32TB of data on 7200RPM spindles, running on the DS1812...super quiet! hopefully these drives fair out for the next 5 years or so.

Typically external drives are the lower graded stuff (like how they have one chip but some run better than others so some get sold as, say, full Titans, others as Titan LE; or some as GTX 680 some as GTX 670), so they put them in externals knowing most people will not run those externals 24/7. Good luck to you. I personally would not try to buy-external-and-run-as-internal experiment.

Personally I would take a 5 yr warranty over a 2 yr one any time. GL

skip synology and get a QNAP unit... much more capable interface and speedier for a similar unit
