Hello, I'm totally new to NAS & their many different configurations. I have a 2 part or 2 system question below.....

My first thought is to get a Synology DS214+, with 2x4TB WD Reds HD's. Then add a DX213 Expansion Unit later, with the same amount of storage.

I want to store video files in the DS214, setting it up for redundancy (Raid 1).
I want the DX213 to store my other files, also in Raid 1 config.

Is this a good setup?

OR ______________________________________________

My second thought: Get the DS412+, 4 bay with 4x4TB eventually, but I'd start off with just (2) 4TB drives at first.

My question for this setup is, with 4 hard drives installed in the DS412+, can this unit be configured as, Disc1 my video files, Disc 2 backs up disc 1. Disc 3 my other files, Disc 4 backs up Disc 3?

Thanks

Or, run raid 0, and use a backup program like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost, to back up whatever drive I want to whatever drive I choose. ????

If you think you'll need the extra storage in the long run, I'd probably just get the 4-bay to begin with.

Do not use RAID-0. Ever.

Do not think about it in terms of "X stuff on Disk 1, Y stuff on Disk 2." The primary benefit here is building a fault-tolerant array - everything goes on all the disks, and if one disk fails, nothing bad is likely to happen. Just replace the dead HDD and rebuild the array.

Thanks for the Reply.

Ok, so I can start off with 2x4TB hard drives. Put all my files on them. When I run out of space, add another 4TB drive, which will make 3. At that point the NAS will be using all 3 drives instead of the initial 2. Use 3 drives until I need to expand and add the 4th.

So which raid configuration to run? Raid 10?
