Syncing Fallout NV saves with steam cloud

So I am planning on doing a reformat next week and I'm about 20% through fallout NV and would like to carry over my current saves for when I get my comp back up and running after the reformat. So to make use of the Steam cloud save system what do I need to do?

When I open properties of Fallout NV in my Steam library, under 'Updates' I have 'Steam cloud' ticked and enabled (it's also enabled in the Steam settings) but it says 0bytes of 100mb used so I assume it hasn't actually uploaded anything yet. How do I force it to sync?
