My fan recently went dead on my DFI Lanparty nF4 Ultra motherboard, more like a month ago. It seems to be fine under reg load but when I open 2 instances of FFXI the CPU comes to a standstill practically. I would think that would be normal considering the circumstances. The thing that gets me is that I am not getting errors or shutdowns, it just is like pretty much locked up until I close one instance. I've never realy run 2 instances for more than 30 seconds since the fan died.

What I am asking is, can you have damage to the chipset and still be abe to run at normal load? Would it be better to replace the board or can I get away with a chipset fan? What are some signs of cipset damage?

First of all, have you blown out your case to get rid of all dust particles?

Give that a shot, and I recommend you try a different fan too.

If that doesn't work, how bout a good old fashioned reformat? :)

You might have "windows rot" which causes systems to freeze and screw up for no apparent reason. When I've had slowdowns in the past, it was usually due to the hard drive working too hard under stress...trying to find pieces of data scattered all over the place. After a year or more of use, your hard drive accumulates millions of tiny gaps where data has been added and deleted repeatedly. Defragging can't get rid of the gaps. This makes your case temperature rise and also puts more strain on the CPU.

I recommend you get an external hard drive and copy all of your files over, then reinstall Windows, update your BIOS to the latest version, blow out your case really really good with compressed air..

When you are finished, the hardware AND software will be like-new, and it should be running much better.
