Symptoms of bad CD-Rs?

I never had this problem with CD-Rs I've used in the past, but I just opened up a spindle of PNY 16x CD-Rs and I'm having trouble with them. When I loaded up a cuesheet to burn an image in CDRWin and hit record, the burning didn't start right away, but the cd drive was spinnning like it was having a hard time reading it. The first one I tried just became a coaster, the burning popup never came and there was no error message, but I think it did write a lead-in or something because it's visible on the bottom of the cd. The next ones I tried had the same results, except it never started the writing process I guess because the CDs were still blank after it failed. When I tried a fourth time, it did work, and started burning after maybe around a minute of reading.

When I try to burn in Nero it just keeps on trying to read te CD but doesn't ever start burning. I eventually have to hit ctrl-alt-del to close Nero and reboot. And when I hit the CD-info button, it takes over a minute just to read that it's a blank cd. Well I'm gonna try with a different brand of CD-Rs right after I reboot, I'm sure it'll work fine. So what makes a CD-R bad right out of the box? Argh, I got 3 spindles of 50 of these from Best Buy. These CDs also make a crunching sound when I lightly press down on the spindle, not good:disgust:
