Symmetric = Good Looks? I just don't understand how?

No one that I know is not symmetric. Their left side of the face matches with the right side. So where does the notion that "Symmetric = Pretty Face" come from? Any examples?

I don't necessarily agree with symmetry = good looking. There are a some girls I know who aren'te quite symmetrical but they are still HOT. (i.e. Its naughty time)

there was a show on Discovery or one of those "smart" channels about this

in most cultures this is true , symmetry == good looking

i can't recall why they said it was that way, maybe search the discovery channel web site for the show

i think it was something about "Faces" or "beauty"

good symmetry is not the primary factor when it comes to current social norms
it's more about spacing of primary facial features and what current trends are. plus you say everyone you know is symmetrical but if you were to do a true analysis
I believe you would find discrepancies.

I meant generally looking. Their one eye isn't missing or 2 inches below the other one.

that's an understatement. real symmetry is exceedingly rare.

oh so your saying your Friends aren't deformed, well thats good!
I think prominent deformity disqualifies you from the good looking category.

You might be surprised. I did a bit of reading on this quite a while ago, but this is the only example that I could find quickly.

It came from a study that was done some years back. I remember reading about it. Babies prefer symettrical faces. Monkeys do to.

Check of the sciencenews archives.

I think this has anthropological roots.... a symmetrical face indicated pure genes and/or a strong unblemished body. This is sort of irrelevant today, but has stuck with us

the show was "The Human Face with John Cleese"

I saw this. I think this was the show where they did a study of hundreds of peoples faces, scanned them into the computer, averaged everything out (nose length, eye seperation etc) and came up with two perfectly "average" faces, one male, one female. The faces were nearly perfect and beautiful. I guess the most beautiful face is the most average one 🙂

My girlfriend's boobies aren't even. Doesn't bother me one bit. Drives her insane, though.

I had a girl like that as well. Always complained but you couldn't really tell unless you actually measured and even then they shifted if she wasn't exactly straight up. All in all she wanted to see a fault about herself. Talking about millimeter differences.
