Symbol on my cellphone

I have cingular, am using Motorola v551. I have not been able to access internet (like shop ringtones etc).
Recentl, however, I have this symbol onmy phone now, its an E (only curved like using ComicSans font, or a backwards 3) and has a green and red, slanted dot thingy, the shape of a comma (,). Since I have gotten this symbol, I can use these options. Im not sure if its exactly related though, could be coincidence. My phone tells me its in Extend when it is, so I do not think it is that. What does it mean?

Pretty sure that's the GPRS indicator, not sure what that specific one means though.

nah the GPRS thing usually is a little sqaure thing with two blocky "arrows". At least my manual only shows two diff symbols for GPRS indicators, and they are not this.

That'd be the CSD data indicator, it's to the right of the GPRS indicator. I didn't know the 551 was capable of EDGE, but I suppose it's entirely possible, and it would explain the E

basically allows you to talk while online, max speed i believe is around 96kbps

It's not GPS, as in global positioning system... but GPRS... it's just wireless internet/data. Edge is similar to GPRS, but almost broadband speed.
