Symantec warns Microsoft about Sybari buy

It's diplomatic. But it's gunboats up the Yangtse

By INQUIRER staff: Tuesday 08 February 2005, 18:36

SOFTWARE FIRM Symantec has written to say Microsoft's acquisition of Sybari Software today - a firm which sells antivirus and antispam products - needs to be put into context.
This is probably a Symantec formula drawn from years of dealing with Microsoft - the diplomatic corps could probably learn a trick or two from software vendors. Well, not Microsoft.

Symantec said that Sybari does not own its core scanning technology but relies on vendor scanning engines. They, said Symantec, provide "the plumbing" but not the core security service and response technology.

So Microsoft doesn't have the security and antivirus response that's needed, Symantec gently suggests.

Basically, without the diplomatic language veneer, we think Symantec is saying get off our patch, Microsoft.

Who cares? It is companies like Symantec that sell Antivirus software that are propagating all the threats to keep themselves in business anyway.

and their bloated $80 packages of crap software bring any computer they are installed on to a crawl.

a good AV program should cost no more than $15 and include a year of updates.

A good AV program costs nothing and includes a lifetime of updates.

So all good software should be free? It costs money to develop and research these things.

AnitVir is much better than AVG -- I have both on my machines -- and also free.

I'm not arguing against AVG - I have it loaded on my sister's laptop and my secondary PC. He's basically saying "good software should be free because I'm 18 and can't afford to buy software".

$14 is still "no more than $15" so technically speaking, you can bite me. :p
