please elaborate...how do I check it? and for what?
i should also add that nav just opens and closes right away when i try to run it....

open your HOSTS file via notepad and check for any entries for symantec.com ... there shouldn't be if everything is alright.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Your infected with something. Also your host file is probably munged (see other responses already in the thread about it). What date are your defs from, they can't be current.

hosts file is ok. i guess there is a virus on this machine. its the inlaws. i cant run nav or get to symantec. what to do?

Go download Adaware and SpyBot and run those first. That should handle any HOSTS file misdirections that may be present. Then try to get to Symantec or Trend Micro or any other antivirus vendor. If you still can't, go to www.download.com and get an antivirus program there instead.

techfuzz
