Symantec Antivirus push updates to Windows XP?

I don't know if this is a problem with Windows XP Home, XP Pro, or both. I don't have XP Pro right now to test with at the moment. I am trying to push updates from a Windows 2000 Pro machine to a bunch of different clients. The machine pushes updates fine to the Windows 2000 machine, but when I try to push to the Windows XP machine, I get a login popup that says:

you must log in as administrator to the windows domain that the client computer (ComputerName) belongs to

Everything is on a workgroup with the same workgroup name, although I don't believe that matters. I've created the client username and password on the machine pushing the updates just to see if that made a difference, but it doesn't seem to work.

Has anyone else encountered this before and could possibly help me out? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try disabling the built-in firewall options in WinXP or use the File/Printer sharing exception.

Try accessing the machine with \\computer\c$ if that doesn't work then it could be your problem. Possibly permissions or shares. I'm not sure if XP Home even creates those admin shares by default... you could try creating a c$ share and see if that solves the problem.

Firewall definitely has to be off though, also watch out for third-party firewalls.

xp home does not create the c$ share, and lacks the RPC stuff for remote managment. that Pro has (can't use ps tools on home)

So, is this going to be a complete waste of time or can I add these features to XP Home? I know I can add certain sharing features to Home to make it more like Professional, but I don't know about this. Any ideas?

Guess you are out of luck with XP home edition. You will most likely have to install the Symantec AV client manually and use Unmanaged solution.
