Saw this at a local Autozone in Chicago (22nd and Western).

Sylvania Silverstar light bulbs (9006-9006-etc) normal go for $24.99 each but I saw them at a B&M store for $19.99. Save $10 immediately, then go here to get the coupon for another $10 off!

Want some math? Here's some math!

Old price: 2 x $24.99 ~= $50
New price: 2 x $19.99 ~= $40 - $10 rebate = $30

These are the really bright, almost HID-like bulbs that you've seen people with. These aren't bootleg nor will they fry your headlight fixture.

Get in the zone! AU-TO-ZONE!!

(I had to do that...)

Edit: It looks like it's a general price reduction. Most stores have dropped their prices to $19.99. But you can still apply the rebate. Sylvania's website has links to vendors who sell silverstars.

Thanks Scrappy! I just bought two sets a few weeks ago (hi and low beam). The $10 rebate says that it will refund a maximum $10. It also says that the offer expires 6/30. Does anyone have any idea when the promotion started though? I'd like to know if it's worth my time to send in the $10 rebate.

Thanks again.

Sal,

What original price did you get them at? I've been staying away from the 'stars since they used to be so much. Did you get them at $19?

GET THESE BULBS!!! I got mine for $25 not too long ago and been loving the change ever since. I have old style headlights (not clear) and it has made a complete difference. I can see about 50ft further at regular and about 100ft better with brights...its amazing what one pair of decent bulbs like these can do :D

aren't they regular halogen bulbs that are just marketed better ?
what makes them worth that price ?

seems a bit over priced to me compared to the other brands.. except ( PIAA way over priced )

I paid $25 for each 2 pack a few weeks ago at Autozone. I haven't had a chance to install them yet, so they are still in the wrapper. The guys over on the Z06vette forum seem to really like these bulbs, so I thought that I'd give them a shot. I've been a long time Hella and PIAA fan, but I didn't like the direction that PIAA has been going lately (making their halogen bulbs look like HID's when they are nowhere near HID's in terms of illumination and looks). The last set of PIAA's that I bought were the Superwhite's and they shine blue on the road and don't illuminate as well as regular halogen's IMO. I've been told that the Silverstar's don't shine blue on the road even though the glass filliment is tinted blue like the PIAA's. Plus, the price was right. I would've spent $60 for just one set of PIAA's.

I mean.. $5 each is not that big of a deal. Sometimes I get carried away with these deals. It's like a game to me. ;)

isekii-kun,

Most aftermarket bulbs are just regular bulbs with an after manufacture tint or lower resistance to burn hotter (but reducing life and safety). Silverstars were designed to shine brighter. Check out the website; it'll explain.... Besides, how many other bulb manufacturers (besides Piaa) actually have websites that really discuss their product.

I'll have to look around but I remember seeing an unbiased comparison with silverstars. They really are much brighter. You can tell when someone has them installed vs the bootleg blue bulbs.

Plus, $19 isn't much different than other bootleg bulbs which tend to be in the $14-$19 range anyway (to answer your question)

Now I'm trying to remember this from chemistry, but I seem to remember these headlights are actually a non-halogen compound, Sodium Phosphorus if my memory serves me. (Which it usually doesn't, but meh) The difference is like this:

First, go look at the lamps at a parking lot in one of the older shopping centers near you, the sort of orangey-tinged ones or maybe not so orange but definitely tinged in some way.

Now go to the newest shopping center or department store or Wally-mart in your area and look at those lights.

The old ones are halogen based (probably), whereas the ones at the brand new Targèt (silent "t") use the same stuff as these new headlights. The light is more "piercing" because it is a more complete spectrum of light. (or something like that, again with the memory)

Oh yes, feel free to point out that I'm stupid if I got anything wrong.

EDIT: Okay, I'm stupid, it's not a non-halogen compound. Regardless it still works kind of like I described; the output spectrum is much more broad than most headlights.

Actually I 'think' the old orangey lights you refer to are low pressure sodium bulbs.

Arkayz,

Typically, it's pretty easy. More like a 5-10 minute install. It is car dependant. Check your user's manual to see how and where to install. Usually, there's a cap of some sort that protects water, etc from getting into the headlamp assembly. Unscrew it, take out the bulb, holding the base not the bulb, and swap in the new one.

For safety reasons, you might want to re-adjust the light level so you don't blind people in-front of you.

Make sure you shine those Silverstars on the road, not the drivers, people!

I bought these a couple months ago. Still haven't got the rebate. These bulbs are a lot brighter, I could see the difference right away. They still aren't as good as HID, but are much cheaper to upgrade to. My local Autozone didn't have them so I had to order them from the website so I got stuck with shipping.

BTW, a monkey should be able to change the bulbs in a car. It took a whole 10 minutes and that includes the time looking in the manual. Don't fear the unknown.

BTW,

There's a random add that pops up in the forums for 95% Xenon Headlight Bulbs (bad linky). These are the crap bulbs I was talking about. These are guaraunteed dimmer than stock and burn faster. Stay away from this stuff...

... nice how they happen to come up in my thread....

watch out... guys over at honda-tech reported that these bulbs don't last too long... a lot of the guys who bought them say they blew out within 6-9 months. Silver lining is that they were one of the best bulbs they used :) not meant as a thread crap, just wanted to warn you guys.

edit:

I should say that they modified the bulbs a little (cut a plastic tab off the base) and ran the 9005 bulb in the low-beam 9006 housing. Not sure if that's the reason why they had such short life.

I saw a post over at honda-tech about 2 months ago (http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=451093) that talked about this rebate, so I'm thinking that you're in the clear for this. Go for it =D

About 6 months ago someone broke into my car (1994 Ford Explorer) and stole my CD-player and CD's, which wasn't a problem since I had copies of the CD's on my comp and that CD player was almost burned out anyway, but apparantly whoever it was stole the owner's manual too. I guess it's some kind of trophy thing or whatnot. Anyway, I'm not gonna shell out $100+ just to get back the damn manual. Anybody have a link to somewhere that has the manual or at least the procedure for installing these things on a '94 Explorer?

By the way, when my mechanic found the car broken into he called the cops like he should have. Unfortunately the dispacher told him he could just move the car and not worry about fingerprints, which was seriously bad advice. The investigating officer said they probably could have caught the guy considering he touched the door and the glove box to get the stuff, but all the evidence was destroyed when the car was moved. :frown: F%$#ing stupid people....
