Sygate Personal Firewall

Has anyone used this? I heard from a few reviews that it might be a good (free) replacement for the slightly annoying ZoneAlarm (with it's sporadic banning of ports, etc..). However even on 'Ultra' security Sygate seems to let anything and everything through. It's apart from the ultra bit all of the settings are default. Anyone know what i'm doing wrong?
