Apparently Sygate firewall's sms.exe is eating 60% of resources on a lot of machines.
I tried reinstalling but it just doesn't work.

What a good firewalls to switch too?

I've been using sygate personal firewall pro for years.

edit: if you mean memory, n/m, no idea. Don't have memory problems with the smc.exe

sounds to me like you're transfering data, and the IDS is enabled on a low end cpu machine. (eg: 1.2ghz athlon)
this can really smack the CPU around.

with a 1.8ghz athlon xp it isn't as bad, and is even better on an a64 2ghz.

Yeah, I've never had any probs with Sygate's firewall ... always found it to be quite good. Sounds like user/system problem more so than Sygate.

I just did. am going with Kaspersky Internet security.Seems to be just as good as their firewall.

 I was using Zone Alarm (free version), but their last couple of updates have had problems. One was setting the home page in IE (doesn't affect me because I have it set at about:blank and use it only for xp updates) and the other was changing the HOSTS file. That would've been problematic because I use the HOSTS file from mvps.org which is updated often).

So, I uninstalled ZA and my AV which lapsed today and d/l'ed Kaspersky's Internet Security 6 (trial). I like it. The AV is excellent. It found crap on my system that TrendMicro's PC-Cillin (my previous AV) never caught, and the firewall is surprisingly very good.

The only con was that Kaspersky d/l's updates often during the day, and you have to reboot after each one. So, I changed it to a daily update which means only one reboot a day.

Amazon had the cheapest price that I could find ($59)

it depends on what you need/want.

if you want tighter security inside your internal network, then running a firewall with portscan detection, IDS and other useful features, then it's just one more layer of deterrents.
