Syba SATA/PATA Contoller

I've been pondering this controller:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815124023

It's attractive because it's cheap. But reading the reviews, it was pointed out that you could not run a single SATA, because the raid could not be turned off. I can use the extra IDE slot, but I'm also considering adding a SATA optical drive, so what would it do...look for two of them and not boot?

I was also interested in a couple of comments regarding the fact that it works with Linux. But this is a software raid...isn't it? I know that SuSe squawks warnings everytime it sees my SATAs along with the software raid on my motherboard, which I think is very similar.

When reading some info on my Antec case, it explained that a couple of extra LEDs were for attaching to controller cards. Does all controllers have this option or requirement?

The reason that I'm thinking about this is to be able to connect my two optical drives on different cables, and to be able to connect another SATA HD. But, I don't know if I set the raid to JBOD if this would work.

Not all RAID cards have the connections for activity LED, so you really just have to go through the manual of the card that you have / are getting.

I've used a card I believe kinda like this, but it was just to get a SATA drive working on my machine. If you are looking to add some drives / ports to your machine with a card like this, then it works great. Just don't expect to do RAID with stellar performance or something. 🙂

I have no desire to use raid, in fact, I wish the card had no raid. I would simply buy a card without raid, but everything that I have seen was about 3 times the price.

Then it will be fine. I've never had a controller, RAID or otherwise, that had a problem with just connecting hard drives to it. I've never had to run the drives in JBOD or anything to get them to work, so you shouldn't have a problem at all.
