SXGA+ LCDs for desktops?

Can anybody explain to me why it is that when you move up from XGA (1024x768)on a notebook, the next size is almost always SXGA+ (1400x1050), but on desktop LCDs it is SXGA (1280x1024), which is an improper aspect ratio? Why on earth don't they make SXGA+ 19" LCDs so that things aren't squished?

I'm really just baffled by this. You'd think it woudl be really unpopular to have a 5:4 resolution on a 4:3 screen. None of the major notebook manufacturers do this, so why is it the standard for desktops??????
 
I've wondered this too. Why not make it 1280x960? That's what I made my LCD run at, and it doesn't look too bad.
 
Most standard resolutions have a 4:3 aspect ratio: eg 1024x768, 14001050, etc. While most 17" to 19" desktop LCDs use the 1280x1024 resolution, which has a 5:4 aspect ratio, these monitors are also physically 5:4, so things aren't squished.

It's actually kind of good in a way because my 17" LCD is thus closer to a square than a 4:3 panel, and so I get more viewing area despite the set 17" length diagonal 🙂
 
Samsung makes a really nice 21" UXGA (1600x1200) LCD monitor, the 213T. Just got one for the missus. Now I want one but can't justify it because I already have a 21" Sony CRT.

you need a gfx card with dvi dual link connectors...workstation class cards for the pc, or the mac 6800 gt/ ultra

in my dream setup, I'd have two ibm t221s and a 30" cinema display powered by 2 quadro 4400s on the tyan k8we. Oh, and dual dual core opterons. 🙂

note: IBM t221 = 3840 x 2400 mmmm screen real estate.
 
I'd love to have a 17"-18" SXGA+ flat panel. I went looking for one recently, and didn't find it; I had to settle for the 20" UXGA 2001FP.
 
Well, it's good to know that they're physically 5:4. I swear I've read reviews, etc., that say that circles are squished, but maybe they were confused or talking about 1280x1024 on a CRT--ie that res on a 19" CRT?

Still, I like the extra real estate of the SXGA+ that my notebook has, and I'm sure that it would be a great resolution for a 19" LCD--not too many pixels per square inch and you can REALLY do 2 windows side by side (unlike 1280x1024). If only I could cough up the cash for an UXGA...

I imagine that someone got confused. They were probably trying to use a resolution of 1280x1024 on a monitor with a 4:3 aspect ratio (or vice versa), or they were using a full-desktop wallpaper that was designed for one aspect ratio on a monitor with a different aspect ratio. Hardly insurmountable problems.

I use a lot of different strange resolutions -- 1600x1200 (CRT & LCD) being about the only "normal" one in our house. We also have 1920x1200 (17" LCD), 1280x800 (15" LCD), and 1280x600 (10" leetle, beety, Japanese notebook).

You get used to them. They're all useful.

Since that resolution is 4x the area of 1280x800, im willing to wager that the proper terminology for that resolution is something like WQXGA. Where WXGA is 1280x800 and Q is quad = 4x the area.

For example the IBM T220 (T221?) is WQUXGA having a resolution of 3840x2400 which is 4x the area of WUXGA



The H in your example stands for Hex = 16x the area. Unforunately there is no F, and the H would supersede the U letter. 😛

Having a resolution of WHUXGA would be awesome. 7680x4800 worth of awesome.
