I used to play golf pretty often in middle-high school with my grandfather, about 2-3 times a month, even more during the summers. I was pretty decent, could shoot in the mid-high 80's with consistency. I had to give it up once I left home due to school and working full-time.

Now that I'm done with school, I've really been wanting to pick it back up. I finally got off my ass and picked up an iron set this morning. Took them out to the range this evening for about 3 hours. Wow, my arms are beat. I don't remember it being this strenuous when I was younger...

I've never played real golf. Just miniature golf. They called me Shooter McGavin at the local Mini-Golf place and whenever I would get the golfball in the hole, I would shoot it.

You shot in the mid 80s consistently in middle school?
How many mulligans? Par 3 course? Why does EVERYONE lie about their golf score?

My thought exactly. If someone can legitimately shoot in the 80s in high school playing 2-3 times a month they'd be among the best players that ever lived or they'd be a gigantic honking internet liar. I trust Occam's Razor to identify which of the two is true.

Well, the reason they only shot 82 is that with a 10 year layoff they were swinging easy, so their driver was only flying 350 yards. Once they get in shape a little and go after it they'll be able to hit it 430 and the scores will drop.

No lie, I played Wednesday with a real hacker. #18 is a short par 5, reachable for bigger hitter, but fairly narrow with lots of trouble everywhere. Off the 18th tee he drubbed one and took a mulligan. The mulligan was a giant slice into the trees right. He found that one hacked once and missed, hacked again and missed, picked up his ball and dropped it in the fairway. He hit the next one into a stream about 200 from the green. He took his drop maybe 50 yards PAST the stream and his approach was about 5 yards short of the green. He then hit a halfway decent chip and made the putt. When he was pulling his ball out of the hole he said, and I quote "It took 18 holes, but I finally made a par".

When I started playing in middle school and was nowhere near shooting less than 100. By my junior/senior year in HS, I could hit between 85-90 consistently (mid-high 80's). I don't see how that is a big deal after 5+ years of practice.

It's not like I said I went out today after 6 years and shot an 85.

Maybe you should read his post before posting? He said middle school and high school. For all we know, he could have been doing his mid-80s during his senior year of high school.

That's really very good after just 5 years if you are following the rules. You should have played in high school or college because you would have been a pro if you were shooing in the mid 80s in high school.

Or you're playing an incredibly easy course.

I'll skip the reasoning on why I did not play golf in HS. I'll probably get called a liar again.

I did not play much in high school, and got a gift certificate for a lesson and a bucket of balls several years ago. It had been at least 15 years. I thought I'd see about body memory and try golfing right handed. HAHAaaaaaaaaa! That was a no go.
I grabbed a left handed 6 iron and hit a perfect shot down the range. It was a thing of beauty. The instructor commented on it, and after that I proceeded to top or slice or hook every subsequent attempt:)

Lol, my friends and I were just discussing that yesterday. The truth eventually comes out though.

And what the fvck is wrong with that? Sounds legit to me.

I've read it several times. And its still BS unless he's playing some par 3 county course.
Shooting 80s CONSISTENTLY only playing ~20 times a year (given year round golfing) he'd have the potential to be a highly ranked amateur if he actually put some effort into it.

Sorry, until I see a verified scorecard, I'm calling BS on him and ANYONE that says they shoot sub-90 consistently on a legit course

I've heard or read that most all golfers would never break 100 if they actually played by the rules. Something like 50-100 strokes or more should be added to their score because they break a rule on almost every stroke.

You are NOT allowed to touch or move that ball once it's in play and not on the green! (unless of course very special circumstances). How many golfers don't like their lie and they improve it? Most of them.

Actually I'm calling bullshit on anyone that claims to shoot any number consistently. A pro has maybe a 15 shot difference between his best rounds and his worst. A top quality amateur a few more, like 18. A weekend hacker more like 25 if he actually followed the rules and counted every stroke. But hackers tend to get more creative with their scorekeeping when they're playing their worst and while 85 might be possible on their best day they're shooting a buck-ten on their worst. Nobody on earth legitimately scores in a 5 stroke range consistently. Nobody is even close. If somebody claims to you can pretty much dismiss every word that comes out of their mouth after that.
