My brother is having some issues with the game. He has an i7 920 cpu and a gtx 480 gpu. His issue is that when the video settings for the game are turned up to max the game disconnects from the server quite frequently but at low settings it does it a lot less frequently.

He usually chooses the light to medium servers and has a wireless 5GHz connection for his computer. It is just this game he is having problems with. What would cause the game to disconnect more frequently with higher video settings then the lower ones?

When you say "disconects from the server" do you mean he goes back to the server selection page or the game crashes?

Driver issues possibly, is he fully updated? And if so, possibly a rollback temporarily?

Yes i installed the latest drivers available when the game was installed about a month ago. I will try the newest it should need a gtx 570 or 580 to run properly correct. I believe it is more of a cpu demanding game correct me if i am wrong. It wouldnt be the game or anything like that correct? Because he still disconnects with the lower gpu settings just less frequently.

I wouldn't call it a GPU lightweight but it should run fine on ultra with a GTX480.

You need drivers from here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/indexsg.aspx?lang=en-us

if he has a GTX480 you need "400 series" drivers and make sure the correct operating system (i.e 32 or 64bit) is selected.

Ok I downloaded and installed the 301.24 beta drivers for his card. I believe the ones he had was the 275.73. Ill have him play for a while and see if it happens.

Update: So with the new drivers the game began to lag so much it was unplayable with the high settings.

What do you mean "lag"? That would infer more of an internet problem that a GPU one. Try turning vsync on, the GPU utilisation at certain parts of the game are stupid (like inside the players starship) maybe his card is overheating.

Have you go afterburner installed to keep an eye on temps?

Also where are you finding the 301.245 drivers? The page I linked shows 296.10 for the 480 with these selections from the drop down menus

GTX480
Windows 64bit (same for 32 if he has it)

Ok I see now you decided to install the beta drivers, you are trying to resolve a problem here not cause another one so install the proper fully released drivers and lets start from there ok. There is a reason I linked that specific page before so pls use it.....

Yes I understand that the lag would mean an internet problem but the game does this with the settings turned on hi that is why I did not relate it to the internet.The video settings shouldn't cause it to just drop from the server like that. He also plays more gpu demanding games then this with no ill effects on temps.

The drivers that were installed before I touched it should have been adequate they were out for quite a while after the games release. I understand that a beta driver may cause problems but there is no change with the driver regardless of the fact it being whql or not.

I do have other video cards to try but like you said a 480 should be plenty for this game. Unless the patch they release today will help anything. I know that the cpu temps get into the 45-50c range do you think that could cause it?

Not "should" it is more than enough, fact.

I doubt it although you could do a lot worse than reinstall the game incase some of the files became corrupted.

Nope, that is about smack bang on "normal" operating temps for that CPU.

I really don't know what else could have changed that would affect the game in the way that he is describing. I even disabled all the programs and services I can to see if that made a difference and it did not. There is more then enough ram 12GB in fact.

I don't know if i forgot something.but what game is it. i prefer gaming with a wire.did get issue with wireless in the pass.

Star Wars The Old Republic. The wireless connection is all that is available to him.

I took your advice and uninstalled the game. I also reinstalled it but also using "revo uninstaller" program to monitor the install and basically what it said that does is watches where all the installed files and reg keys go and then you can uninstall the game with the same program and it will remove all the items it saw being created with the program.

After that I reinstalled and the server he tried first still game him some problems which led me to believe it was not the game install. Later he told me that even on the light servers he had trouble but he did find a server that did not disconnect him like he was having on the other servers. So it seems that the same sever he has been using even with low to medium traffic has been the cause of this issue. So the server was fine initially but then gradually became worse. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems the issue does not reside on his computer side or internet side but their server side.

it's the server side. not is pc.

No other way around the issue other than selecting a different server i assume. I was not familiar with the game really before this but he told me in order to use a character from one server to another you pretty much have to start over there is no transferable way to use his character from one server to another.
