Switching Video Card Brands

So I am replacing my GF4 Ti4200 with a Radeon 9700 Pro. Now I want to do this without reinstalling/formatting windows. I had problems upgrading from a geforce 3 to my current geforce 4, inwhich I had to reinstall. What steps should I take before I install the new card physically? Are there removal tools I need?:confused;

When I went from my 5800 to 9800, I believe I just changed video cards to std vga, rebooted, and ran "Nasty File Remover v0.71" to clean the registry. I've had no problems.

Ooops. Good point. I did remove the nVidia drivers in the Control Panel Add/Remove Software before running that "Nasty File" program, Ithink there's one called Detonator Destroyer also.

Well, uninstall the gf4 drivers then shutdown. Install the new card. Then install the drivers for the new card. Never had a problem. You should always uninstall old drives before updating drivers and changing cards.

Same here. I uninstalled Nvidia det drivers via Add/Remove from Control panel. Shut down. Swapped card. Rebooted and installed ATI Cat drivers. Never had any problem. Same with my wife's machine.

When I upgrade to whatever flavor of ATI is fastest on my next upgrade cycle, I am going to do the following:

1. Unintall the nV drivers through Control Panel.
2. Reboot into safe mode.
3. Remove the nV card from the device manager.
4. Unplug broadband connection.
5. Run cab cleaner (part of driver cleaner)
6. Run driver cleaner.
7. Empty recycle bin.
8. Shut computer off.
9. Remove old card and install new.
10. Install CAT 3.7 or Omega 3.6 - having downloaded these previously.
11. Reboot.
12. Plug broadband connection back in.

You can do the control panel only method and that works fine for some, but if you have trouble this is a little extra insurance.

I uninstalled nVidia drivers and simply loaded up ATI drivers. No problems at all.

Went from a Geforce3 TI500 to an ATI Radeon 9800NP. What a difference!

The same. As to why you had troubles from converting to GF3 to Gf4, I have no idea.
