The TV is a samsung 67A850. When changing source to a hdmi one it takes a good 5-10 seconds before the video is actually displayed.

This isn't normal, right? It displays "searching for signal".

That sounds about right actually, it takes that long for the handshake to take place.

I don't know about 10 seconds, but my TV usually takes 3-5 seconds to switch HDMI inputs.

I have an A650, and I find that it depends on the particular connection that you're switching to.

For me, the PS3 is very quick, HTPC is a little longer, and cable box takes ungodly long (10 seconds-ish). So yeah, it probably is just the time for the handshake to happen with whatever device you're switching to.

HDCP handshaking = teh suck.

Cable boxes are particularly bad at it. Yet another reason to use a Tivo (they're very good).

Fortunately my Denon AVR-3808ci is reasonably quick to switch HDMI (I run everything through the receiver, so my TV is just a monitor). It does seem like my Samsung BD-P2500 blu-ray player is particularly slow to handshake, though.

Yep, that's normal. However new panels and new receiver will start to implement the new quick HDMI switch which basically suspends the HDMI handshake when switched. Once the source re-engaged that HDMI port, the handshake resumes instead of completely starting the whole handshake process over again.

Thanks. That will be a must have feature for a new pre-pro/receiver.

I have the Sammy A330 and the HDMI for my 360 takes about 2 secs to HS. Dont know what tha norm is but 5-10 secs is too long IMO.

From TV Box HDMI to PC HDMI can take 1-2 seconds.

PC HDMI to TV Box HDMI can take 1-2 seconds or if it doesnt like it, about 5-7 seconds.

Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma which Ive had 2 years, possibly a 3 year old model.

Can be frustrating when I want a quick switch.
