My rig:

Duron 650 @ 933 / fop32-1
Kt7-raid
Riad0 9.1gig Quantum KA + 20gig Quantum AS in Raid0
64mb Radeon ES
256mb ram
SB Live Value digiout
Intel pro100+ Nic
Diamond Fireport 40 Dually SCSI card
ChanA: Seagate Elite 9.1gig SCSI (storage drive)
ChanB: Plex 40x, Plex 32x, Plex 4x Burner, 2.1gig Barracuda

Now I made up my mind :)
I'm switching to FULL WIN2K :D

Questions:
What version of the Via 4 in 1 drivers should I use?
Should I get DX8.0a?
I'll most likely use the special purpose Radeon drivers which NEED dx8.0a.

LMK guys :)

1) NTFS
2) Decent memory management (it will actually use the more RAM you give it properly)
3) Security (goes with #1)
4) The GUI "feels" faster
5) You shouldn't have to reinstall it every few months ;)
6) Pinball :D:D

But that's just me ..

yeah the pinball game rules :)

I just installed it yesterday, and I like it alot.. having trouble with one game, but I think once I get it all figured out I will never want to go back to 98. I think MS is on the right track leaving the 9x kernel and going NT.. it is the future

if you are running dually on your other box, you wouldn't want to
switch to WinMe else you have to get rid of the 2nd cpu.

if everything is running fine, why bother?
unless you have too much time on your hands. ;)

Vipe,

If ya don't, I'll drive over to your town and whup your @ss (I'm not that far away from you dood)....that's why you should...lol;)

I love Win2k. The memory management is a tonne better,
The games support is getting better daily,
The networking setup/maintenance/monitoring capabilities are a tonne better,
The GUI is better,
The OS is simply more stable,

And I just like it better!!!

The above of course I am talking over the other MS OSs...:(

Too late guys.
I'm already installing WinME...primarily because it takes less time to install.
I dunno if I'll ever run Win2k on that box....just dont have the inclination to.
But no way I'm running anything else on my Dually box, NO WAY :D

That machine, when done, will run 24/7, and be silent as well (part of my silent server buildup :D)

I have never had stability problems with 98se, WinME, or Win2K. I got sick of double and triple booting - even had linux and nt4 in the mix.

I went straight Win2K recently and it is working great. I have been part of Tech-Net, a Beta Tester, and pretty much an OS junkie for the last 15 years. Win2K has some foibles, but they are more issues of learning to control the OS than anything else. Stay with Win2K would be my advice.

I have kids games from 5-7 years ago that I ran on a DOS/Win 3.1 machine that work great on Win2k.

The only issue you may have would be a driver for the FirePort Card. I had the same card in some of the Betas and RC for Win2k. Win2K kept trying to install the SymbiosLogic driver - which doesn't work with the Fireport cards. The NT4 driver worked fine though.

JMHO :)

Yeah,

and so does Win2k. It detected my Fireport 40 Dually just fine! Never ever a prob!!!

And it also detected my MX300 out of the box..something WinMe and Win9x did not!!!:(

I feel Win2K has a better use of system resources and a more hardware aware OS!!

<< The games support is getting better daily >>

But if it was perfect we wouldn't need Whistler now would we? :p

Huh??

Whistler is MSs new 64BIT OS with newer support for newer hardware and very little backward compatibiity. It may look like the next Win2k, but it ain't!! And I ain't no MS lover either!

It's a new OS built on the NT technology :)(unfortunately:() and is to be the next logical step in MSs OS lineup!

Wherever you heard it was MSs answer to game compatibility you were misinformed!!;)

MS has always maintained that Win9x/Me was their game platform and Win2k was/is to be the SOHO/common users first step towards a total OS!!!

EZ-SCSI from adaptec allows spindown, but there is no version for Win2k, only 98, 95, I believe NT, and not sure about ME, here is the link for it.

Wish I could convince you - after 4 days of tinkering with Win2k I hosed it. One minute I am on the internet and can't see other machines on the NW next reboot I am on neither. Enabled Static IP no Internet but LAN OK, renabled DHCP I am on the net no LAN. Next reboot changes again ..Can't access the WIn2K machine from other machines even though I set up a new share.. blah blah blah. Back to WineMEos.

One Thing: DEFAULT Cool-looking Blue background!!!!!!!!!!! Although you can get the same with win98, lol.

Win2k is so much more stable Ive completly ditched 98 based OS.
Its faster and can manage and use the systems resources more effectivly.
imho
