Switching to AT&T from Verizon

My current plan with Verizon is et to expire in a couple of days or so and I am planning on jumping over to AT&T primarily because, after holding out for a couple of months, I can't resist the iPhone. While I was informed that I could keep my current number, besides purchasing the phone from AT&T, are there any other steps I need to take. Specifically, do I need to notify or contact Verizon indicating that I am no longer using their service?

Thanks in advance.

Of course you have to contact Verizon. They will still bill you if you don't.

When your contract expires, you go to a month to month plan with no obligations. Signing up with at&t using the number porting service will automatically notify verizon. however i would follow up with them to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Yeah just tell ATT your number, they will make you sign some stuff and then they will activate your verizon number on your att account and it will cancel your verizon account automatically.

I know at least 10 people who thought the same thing.

The iPhone is slightly different since you activate it yourself through iTunes. There is an option to port an existing number...it only takes about 5 minutes to get it all set up. You can make outgoing calls immediately; incoming ones may go to your old phone for about 2 hours before the port is complete.

... so do I, and they were correct. Myself included.

I had both Verizon and AT&T for a couple of weeks, and then decided to port my Verizon number to AT&T. Went into an AT&T store, they called the porting dept, the port completed, Verizon sent me a letter saying that my account had been terminated, and that my ETF was payable immediately. I didn't have to do anything w/ VZW except make the final payment to them.
