I had a diagnositc program say that I had smart errors in one of my SATAs. I bought another SATA to replace it, but since it wasn't the same brand as I had, the system wouldn't boot. I disabled the raid array, to isolate the drives from each other, which worked fine. But a couple of days ago, one of my HDs started clicking on random occassions, and now when I bootup, sometimes it works fine, and sometimes it freezes as the desktop loads, and the HD activity light remains steadily lit. I'm not sure how to isolate which one is clicking, because it's not predictable.
Now, I'm thinking about just swapping SATA cables, so that the system boot from the other SATA and that might solve the clicking and freezing. But, I got to wondering if the bios and OS only identifies the drives by the SATA port that they use, or by some other factor. Once I can get rid of the defective drive, I'll install the new one, even though I won't be able to raid it. But before going off on wild goose chase, I wanted to see if anyone could clearup the details for me?
