Switching Proccesors on Mobo?

Well, as you guys know, I have spare parts from my mom's comp which is broke and probably won't be fixed. I have a P4 1.7GHZ, she has like a 2.4GHZ, and I was wondering if I could take her processor and put it in my mobo? They are both Dells, except mine is a bit older. I can't really say what brand the mobo is, because it just came with the dells. Would it break anything just to try?

What Dell models are they? If both are Northwood-core chips, it should be fine.

well, mine is a 4400, which isn't for sale anymore.
Hers is a 2400, which they may still sell.

How can I figure if everthing on the mobo is the same?

I am gonna go ahead and try this, but I need help on getting the HeatSink off, at least I think I do. That should explain the situation better...

The green clip/lever is holding the heatsink down. From the looks of the pics try pushing down,out and up on it. Mess around with it alittle as long as you ain't hard on it you won't break it. I've only built one P4 system before and ain't 100% sure how the CPU fits in there. But it should fit a certain way so don't try to force it. It should only fit one way aswell.

ok. So, what exactly is that black thing then?

And I just noticed, that PSU is only 200W O_O!

Black thing is mounted to the mobo without it the heatsink can't be mounted, it remains. Unless your talking about the chip thats on the motherboard which is the south bridge and it stays. You can't remove it. Well you can but then your motherboard will be killed.

As for the PSU thats no big deal don't worrie about it. Plenty for a basic Dell system.

Well, I can't seem to figure out how to get this thing off. Notinh happens when I push down, and I can't slide it out. I can't lift it up becasue it sticks through slots an both sides! Does anyone have a dell they can look at and get me a picture or something? I have searched on Google a few times already on how to get a Heatsink off, but nobody puts pics, and nobody has a dell to begin with!

A P4 with a passive heatsink??

I've never seen that before...

As ^Sniper^ pointed out, that green clip is what you need to concentrate on... by the looks of it, that little 'lever' type protrusion that is perpendicular to the rest of the clip can be pulled back, possibly releasing the clip.

As for the CPU itself, it'll have a corner marked with a little gold arrow (viewed from the top). This must be lined up with the corner of the socket that's missing a pinhole (look towards the bottom-left of the image.)

It goes without saying that the CPU pins are very delicate... be careful not to bend any! If the CPU doesn't want to go in, don't force it. Check that you've lined up the gold arrow with correct socket edge.

Looking over the pic again. Try pushing down,in(toward heatink) and up. Looks like there might be a hook in the middle of the black mount thats holding the green clip down.
