Switching motherboards, do I need to reformat?

I'm running Win98 SE on my gateway with a P3-450 in it. I also have an Asus A7V with a Thunderbird 1000. I was wondering if I could just swap the motherboards and processors and not reformat/reinstall? Also, what problems will I encounter when switching them?

TIA,

This topic come up every few days.

A clean and fresh install of the OS is the best method for having a nice and stable PC. But there is a trick that many people do by changing a registry entry before moving the HD to the new mobo.

Here is one article that explaines it pretty well.
