I'm planning on upgrading to an AMD 64 3200+ S754 CPU and Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR motherboard. At the same time I wish to install Mepis Linux to create a dual boot system.

What steps need to be done ahead of time in order to make this switch as painless as possible? I know if you switch mobos WinXP creates problems because of different chipsets and that's something I want to avoid.

My system at present:
AMD 2600+
Shuttle AN35N Ultra
1GB Corsair value PC3200
LiteOn DVD
LiteOn CDRW
NEC 2500 DVD
WinXP Pro

Soon to be upgrades:
AMD 63 3200+ S754
Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR

Install XP then Mephis. Windows doesnt recognize linux installs and will not edit the bootloader accordingly. I would have to double check if Mephis uses GRUB or LILO for the bootloader, though I do know that GRUB is very easy to setup for dual booting windows. The interface of GRUBs gui is 10x better than the windows black and white prompt.

You can also have a timer on it to default to a certain OS within a given timeframe, just like for windows.

Actually for the longest time I had borked by windows bootloader and just popped in a gentoo cd and installed grub, a minute of editing later I had full dual boot with a graphical bootloader menu. It was pretty nice.

haha TGS. That is funny, using grub to boot windows. Only a superior geek would know how to do that :) (and that is a compliment)

I have thought about using grub on machines I build for family with a customized boot screen, with my number/email for a "dangit" thing.

Thanks everyone for the help you've given. I will start this process in a couple of days and see how all goes.
