So i'll be starting a new job at a larger corporation where there's a bunch of ppl in different departments of the IT group. Right now I'm coming from a much smaller operation where I was the go to person for everything. You name it I did it. This was bad and good at the same time. Good because I ran the show, I handled all network and server side things. Bad because I hate helpdesk and it can get pretty hectic at times but I love every minute of it. I was able to learn new things and implemented them as I see fit.
So I'm leaving because the company isn't doing so well. We cut approximately 30% of our staff and who knows what will happen. Not to mention our salaries got slashed to save money in the budget. It was a no brainer for me as I'm trying to save money for marriage and a house. One thing is for sure, my gf will like this job much better. No on-call and less stress since I won't have to worry about every little thing on the network.
Anyways, so I keep telling myself that this is for my own good. All I will need to worry about is the servers being up. However, I'll miss being able to interact with the networking part and every move I make will need to be approved by higher ups. Maybe it isn't so bad, I mean it'll be a 9-5 job (most of the time) and after work I can just go home and relax and not have to worry about routers breaking and the SAN not working properly. Then again, I'm taking a step back in my career as I'll be doing less and not being able to research and implement new things that come up. That job is for others in the respective department.
Has another done a similar thing? Do you find yourself bored now that you're doing less?
