Switching Jobs. Is this fair to my current employer?

    I work at a small marketing agency and I've been by far my boss' best employee. I've gotten accounts to double/triple their budgets with us and have gotten many new clients for my company since I started work on April 1st of this year.

    I do consulting for big companies - I often teach executives, directors, and senior managers online marketing techniques. Most of these people are being paid at least 2x as much as me. Also, I was tired of working with clients who sometimes make me want to tear my hair out.

    So after 9 months on the job, I pursued another position and got an offer that's twice as much as what I'm making now. I accepted it and gave my boss a 2 weeks notice.

    He was disappointed and said 2 weeks is not enough and if I leave in 2 weeks, I might burn bridges. He wanted me to stay for another month. So I gave him 3 weeks + email help after I leave instead of 2 weeks. I'm basically bending over backwards trying to provide 3 weeks and email help for as long as he needs.

    Is 3 weeks and email help fair to you guys? I feel very bad but at the same time, I thought 2 weeks is usually standard.

    You need to do what is best for YOU. If he really wanted you to sick around he needs to give you a large raise.

    two weeks is customary...he knows he has to pay your replacement more than you so he wants to save the difference in pay for another two weeks. If your boss really had your best intentions in mind, he would either make you a competing offer or if he can't wish you well on your new endeavor.

    prepare for 3 ugly weeks, where boss will try to make you stay, using various tricks. you should have been firm when you said 2 weeks. I think they will probably make counter offer, simply because if you can make 100% more, then you have been underpaid, so they can offer something more...

    2x the salary? burn that bridge. you'll make enough money to build a new one.

    Sucks for him that 2 weeks isn't going to be enough. If you were able to get an offer of a 100% pay increase then that to me indicates that you were vastly underpaid in your previous position. Your boss knows this and now knows he's going to have to pay your replacement a good deal more than he paid you with possibly diminishing results. I say be firm on the two weeks. His only other option is to somehow make it really worth your while to stay.

    Double the pay? Sounds like you were being taken advantage of. That's criminal.

    Two weeks is sufficient. You're being MORE than generous imo.

    pretty much what everyone here said. if he believes you are that valuable, he'd make a competitive offer.

    3 weeks and email help is not fair to YOU. If I were you I'd backtrack and say 2 weeks and you're out. Even if you were worried about burning bridges (though at 2x salary you shouldn't be), you gave a standard 2 weeks.

    Yes, I pretty much doubled what I'm being paid now along with stock options and better benefits.

    I hate burning bridges because I could really use him as a work reference in the future and he was a great boss. But the underpaying and managing multiple tough clients really got to me.

    It's hard to tell who has the better case.

    In one way ur boss seems like a douche, if he really liked you he could've rephrased it in a much better way like: "we are in really deep shit if you go, can you please leave in 4 weeks instead of 2?"

    But if really by you leaving the company blows up you can work something out with ur ex boss such as quitting and becoming a consultant for like 3 weeks until the company can continue without you.

    Seems like giving him a chance to counter offer would have been the best move.
    But also sounds like was difficult to discern before hand how much you were valued where you are now.

    If you have got clients to double and triple their accounts, then the company is not doing badly, and he can afford to pay you more.

    In fact, its suspicious that he did not make you a counter offer. You are a cash cow as far as he is concerned, so why not pay you more to get you to stay?

    He tried to make you feel bad about going to get more out of you. You shouldnt have even agreed to 3 weeks.

    Think about this - he can afford to pay you more, but doesnt, even when you quit. Then suddenly YOU are the one at risk of burning bridges?

    If it were a modest increase in salary, I might lean a little toward believing an employer. But, if you're capable of doubling your salary? He's using you, and now he figured out a way to manipulate you to get an extra week of a bargain employee.

    2 weeks is the norm. If they're still unhappy after you give them 3 weeks, then *** em. It looks like they'll be unsatisfied no matter what.

    Maybe it was done in a way where the offer was already accepted, so current employer had no opportunity to counter.

    That happens all the time! Employees change their mind about accepting contracts, even after "accepting". Its not nice to go back on one's word (I never have, but nearly did), but it does happen.

    And look at it this way - as far as we know, the employer never even asked if a counter offer was possible.

    You should have held firm with 2 weeks. The e-mail help is particularly worrying to me as there's no way for you to realistically meet expectations on that.

    Look, employment is a transaction - your skills and sweat for compensation (money, time off). A half month of lead time for someone to take over your role is more than enough unless you're at the executive level or in a very rare specialist role. It's your manager's #1 job to hire well; he should have the role well documented and be able to start the flow of resumes on a moment's notice. Don't be fooled into doing his work for him. And never feel badly about ending a business transaction because it no longer is the best one for you.

    Sounds like he is using you. If he really cared about you he would offer to pay you what you are worth not blackmail you into working longer by holding a good reference over your head.

    Personally i would tell him to *** off take the two week or not i dont care, you already have another job anyways.

    Agree with this advice and all the other advice -- you should've held firm to 2 weeks and not offered the email help. He is simply delaying and may offer you a counter, but I would advise against taking it.

    EDIT: Plus, you've only been on the job less than a year. I don't think you have many bridges to burn.

    What, if things turned bad you think he would not dump you even quicker?

    I would have sticked to my 2weeks and if he said it was going to burn bridges then get up and leave right away since he did not want to act like an adult. If the bridges are burned F__k him for being an a-hole.

    Companies don't care about employees anymore like they use to so why do people keep laying down for those same companies/people?
