I plan on buying a vostro v13 that does not have a HDD.

I want to switch my current laptops HDD (from a inspiron 1545) into the vostro v13.

They are both build for 2.5 sata and both laptops are dell.

I heard that I will need to reformat the HDD and have a new operating system disk, is that true?

And would I need a brand new operating system pack or would I just need the re-installation disk?

Do you intend to use the operating system from inspiron 1545 to "new" vostro v13, don't you? I think this will not be possible.

If this is the case then I guess I would buy a new HDD.

When I buy a new HDD do I need a whole new operating system or can I just used an old installation disk and a new product key?

You need an OS for vostro v13, don't you?
You can use HDD from Inspiron 1545 to vostro, but you can't use OS from old Inspiron to Vostro. You have to buy a new OS to Vostro.

What version of Windows is on the Inspiron?

Anyway, if you're running Windows 7 or later, it's compatible with both machines. Just sysprep the HDD before you move it over to the new laptop, then install the drivers. (Which you should download first and stick on a USB drive or something.)

You will almost certainly need to re-activate Windows.

Why doesn't the vostro have a HD ?
You are going to need the vostro's recovery DVD to be able to reinstall the same OEM OS on it.

You could buy the DVD from dell as well, no idea how much they charge for it, but, this route would be the easiest.

Hi, Gizmo J,

The reinstall disk and driver disk should cost you about $10.00 From dell. Of course you will have to wait for the mail to deliver it. They will only sell you the disks for what operating system the laptop came with... Otherwise go to ebay for dell recovery disks

But sometimes you get lucky and the old drive from you old dell will work, But you have to retrain it and maybe have to replace a few drivers..
