switching hard drives

Is there some special way to switch hard drives? I put my friend's hard drive in my PC to retrieve some data cause his PSU went. When I switch them I press the on button and absolutely NOTHING happens. Is there some sort of trick to do this? It's really making me mad. Any ideas?

1) Did you swap HDs or is yours still installed?

2) Is your HD still the master drive and is his jumpered to be a slave drive? If it was his only HD then it needs to be jumpered as a slave (if yours is still installed). So maybe the PC is trying to read HIS HD to boot up to? What operating systems are you both running?

Sorry if these sound like stupid questions. Just need more info.

grab a handfull of computer and bash it on your head, until you bleed - then use your blood to inscribe demonic ritualistic chants and curses on your computer case, banishing it from *not working* ever again. This will ensure that it always turns on, even when you sneeze big snot clots on your RAM while connecting a second hard drive, or something similar.

I took mine out and replaced it with his. And it didn't even start to boot up at all, that's the weird thing. Nothing at all. I've tried it on 2 computers, same thing.

Don't do that

Leave yours (the known, good working hard drive that your computer likes) as the master and plug his in as a slave. Make sure you adjust the jumpers as kjacobs suggests. Then when you boot up you'll see his drive and can get to it as any other drive...
