I have a few questions concerning switching between the two processors

Here is what I am going to be running

1.2 Gig T-bird
Abit KT7a Raid
256 Meg of rev 2.0 mushkin memory
2-30 gig 7200 Maxtor Hard drives
Supermicro 760A 300W
Asus 7700 GTS Geforce card
Win2K OS Dual Boot Win98

1)Are there any extra patches I will need to make sure my rig runs well in regard to the Operating system and possible problems with compatibility
2) What is the best HSF I should use with this mobo

Thank You,

Ausm

I really don't know what extra patches you need but get a taisol CGK for that hot thunderbird.

I have just made this move myself. I went from a P3-600@800 (BX board) to a KT7A-RAID + Tbird 1.2Ghz.

1) I can't speak for Win2K because I haven't got that far yet. But Win98 was easy. All I did was loaded the VIA Service Pack (4in1) that came on the CD with the board. Load DX7/8 first, then the VIA drivers (except the bus mastering drivers - I stuck with Windows default), then your video card drivers, then everything else, and you should be good. I did it this way and my system is very stable. No less stable than my Intel system was.

2) Anything that is Socket A approved I would think. Alpha make probably the most high performance coolers. It depends if you are a) overlocking or not and b) how much noise you are willing to put up with! :)

Back up everything and assume that you'll need to do a reformat in the near future. The dual boot can complicate things if you don't know what you're doing.
http://viahardware.com/ has a good collection of current and older 4n1s - use 4.25a, the 4.28 cause problems with burners. Windows update should take care of most of the necessary os patches for you.

Remeber to install SP1 for Win2K .. also get the AGP reg. patch for Win2K. (and ofcourse as previously mentioned the Via 4-in-1) Then you should be fine.

Also don'e expect Win2K to boot up after you change the hardware. I have yet to find a way to succesfully switch boards without reinstalling Win2K.
