Switching from 2500+ to 2500+ mobile

hey everyone.
I currently am running an AMD Athlon 2500+ and I am curious whether it is worth it to sell that chip on ebay and upgrade to the 2500+ mobile chip. I know that the overclocking possiblities are amazing in it. Also what fans and heatsinks are good for these chips.
Thanks a ton

If you are running your barton 2500+ stock at 333 FSB, you may want to upgrade to a mobile. You'll probably be able to get it to run at 2.3-2.4ghz easily with a 400FSB...better memory bandwidth for your system, provided you have PC3200 memory. If you're running your barton right now like a 3200+, you probably won't notice much of a difference and don't need to upgrade. Pretty much any decent true copper heatsink will do fine for the mobile. Thermalright has some good ones.

in my opinion it is not worth it unless you just wanna spend some money because yur bored and can afford it :)

Well, if you figure he can sell his barton on ebay for about $50, and it would cost another $30 to get the mobile, it's not a bad option if he's running his current barton stock.
Mobiles do alleviate boredom, though
Damn CMOS, have to pull the jumper, AGAIN :p

lol.

I've seriously considered mounting a switch on my motherboard to go from Run to Clear CMOS...still trying to find that sweet spot on mine.
"A little more voltage...hmm...what if I go down .5 on the mult and up the FSB a little...drat...clear CMOS, reset everything...OK, got it stable, man it's running hot, let me turn down the voltage a bit....oops, too much!"

they're both...pretty much every mobile made will run at 3200+ speeds or better, 200FSB.

Don't bother unless you're willing to spend another $40-55 for cooling. They run just as hot as any other xp when running at 1.65-1.75 volts. My 2400 would run at 200x10 (2000) at 1.45 volts, but getting it past 2200 required a premium heatsink, which I decided not to invest in.

Another thing to consider is overcloking capabilities of your motherbard? I am not very familiar with all the differences, but you have to be able to change FSB, be able to change CPU frequency multiplier, CPU voltage. Also do you have memory that can run at 400FSB? If you need to replace motherboard and/or memory then the answer is definetly no. If you do not have to change ether of them, then question becomes do you really need that extra speed? It's always exiting to have something new, but it might not make much sense economicaly.
Maybe a better bet is to wait until Doom3 and Half Life 2 come out and then see if you system is going to be fast enough and if not then upgrade ether vido card or CPU.

It just depends................... My mobile 2600 runs a lot cooler than 1700+ I had a 1700+ DLTC running at 215x11=2365mhz. Now my 7 year old has that cpu in his rig. I have a mobile 2600 running the speed in my signature below.

If your overclocking your 2500+ to 2.2 GHz or more, then no.

If your 2500+ is locked then yes it's worth the upgrade provided you have or are going to get a good CPU cooler, motherboard, and your going to overclock.

Heatwise, I had a 2400+ Tbred B core running 2332 MHz, 166/166 14x fsb/mem/multi @1.85 Vcore for Idle temps of 109' in a 70' F ambient room.

My current 2600+ Mobile is running 2500 MHz 166/166 15x fsb/mem/multi @1.725 Vcore for idle temps of 109' in 70' F ambient room.

Take that for what you will but in general the Mobiles run cooler and faster than equivelent Tbred B cores, and Bartons run just about the same as the Mobile chips although its a little tougher to overclock on the Barton desktop cores as there not tested as stringently as the Mobile cores.

Yup, not really worth it IMO. I'd rather save it towards a next gen A64 CPU.

It was definately worth it for me. I just got a Mobile 2600. Put it in last night and went pretty much right away to 3200 speeds and passed Prime95 for about 10 hrs. That's on 1.55 vcore (MBM5 and Sandra read 1.51) temp under load is 38c

I couldn't get my desktop up that far, cuz it took to much juice and temps were scary high. I haven't even pushed the mobile yet. So for me, yeah, it was worth it. But If I had gotten one of those desktops that easily OC'd to 3200 speeds, I would've been happy to stick with it though.

Yeah, I originally had a desktop barton that wouldn't go past 180 FSB with 1.8v :X
It was the duddest of duds, and my roommates all got to make fun of my comp because their bartons did 3200+ on stock voltage
It cost me about $30 to upgrade, and now I'm sure showing them :p
I do notice smoother system performance, and a bit of framerate boostage, which is good
at least I know my CPU won't be too much of a bottleneck when HL2 and Doom3 come out
I found it pretty fun messing with OCing it

I had a 2500+ originally that wouldn't overclock well at all. I was able to get a refund and I bought a 2500+ Mobile. I'm currently running at 2.5gHz only on 1.68 (actual) which I think is pretty good. I deemed it worth it :)

thanks for all the help !!! I think what i'm going to do is buy a good heatsink for the barton i have now because i only have an average on on there now. then i'll oc the processor some and see how i like the speed then. Oh and I only have pc2700 memory how does that coplicate things with the FSB and does it effect anything else?? Thanks again.

Oh yes it does! Upgrade that ram even before the heatsink. You wont get too much out of your oc (maybe 140ish if its just standard value ram and your damn lucky) which will only get u like a ~5% overclock or so. You really need DDR3200 ram so that you can get your fsb up to ~400ish which will get you a much more significant oc.

Im actually pushing the same chip you are going to push (2500+ barton) and i have it at 11x405 right now with a Thermaltake TR2-M1 hs/fan which was only like $13 bucks including shipping. (im saying fans dont have to be much)
Ram will cost you around $68 (if you get a 512 stick of the kingston value ram on their site thats onsale and at that price after rebate)

Its worth the 80 to do the upgrade, so dont hesitate on questioning the tradeoff.
