Switching from 12v to 5v

Quick question.
I found that most of my fans are running at 12v, including my front fan. I want it to run at 5v. The fan comes with a 3 pin connector that then connects into the PSU 4 pin power connector. There are two wires in the adapter that connects to the 4 pin power connector: one that connects with a yellow wire, and one that connects to the black wire. I assume the black is ground.
My question is: can I just take that wire and connect it to the red wire (instead of the yellow) and have it be at 5v?
Please let me know if you need any clarification.
Thanks for your help!
Mike

On the 4 pin molex from your psu, blacks are both ground, red is 5v and yellow is 12v. So to run your fan at 5v, you need to switch the 5v and 12v pins on either the psu connector or the fan connector. Safer to do it on the fan side so you don't blow something up ion the future by plugging that connector from the psu into something else.

Thanks for the info guys! I think I am just going to switch the red and yellow wires on the adapter since that will never be for anything but a fan.
Thanks again.

You had better mark it so it is NEVER forgotten 😉 Hitting logic w/12V

Out of curiosity, what would happen if a dvd drive or something was hooked up with it switched? Just curious. No, I won't just try and see what happens. 😉
There isn't any problem with me just switching these wires for the fan though, right? Just mark it to make sure nothing other than a fan connects to it?
Thanks.

Yep, I have that, and both 5v fan connectors are taken. I am hoping to use an existing version of that adapter (that I have and wouldn't have to pay for).

Swapped the wires and it works great. Electrical taped the end where something could connect just in case. Thanks everyone!

Grrr... Ya know, even though it is at 5v, it is definitely the loudest fan now. I wonder if I should even have it...
