Switching cell phone providers, keep old price?

I signed up for cell phone service 2 years ago, currently paying $50/month ($58 after taxes) for 1300 minutes. If I were a new customer I'd be paying $80/month for this service, also the same thing as a company I'm interested in switching to.

I called the company I'm interested in switching to and asked if I switched if they could match my rate plan, they said no. I asked then what incentive I would have to pay an additional $30/month (and a 1-2 year contract) and they said a discount on a phone....wow!

Has anyone ever had luck doing this?

BTW $80/month for 1300 minutes is a joke

They consider the phone to be the reason you're buying service these days, not the minutes. You're supposed to be dying to sign up just to get a hot new phone with video and MP3 and iTunes and a camera and text messaging and FM radio service, and be able to pay 6 dollars for a Java game that expires in 30 days.

And there's plenty of people willing to pay a hundred bucks a month for very little in the way of service.

From the company's point of view, they'd be "losing" your 30 dollars per month for 2 years if they matched your current rate, not gaining your 50 dollars per month. They aren't allowed to take into account the fact that it costs them about 2 dollars a month to provide you service. 🙂

Yes, you're paying out the ass for 1300 minutes. It's typical to get a discount on handsets when opening a new account with a cell phone provider. Cell providers typically lose money when you open an account, bigtime. It takes time to earn that back, which is why they hold you to a contract.
