Switching back to XP from Vista x64. Here's why

Well, the thread title says it all

I had Vista x64 installed for a good 6 weeks. Initially I was very pleased!

The install itself was painless, and very much improved over XP. The interface is very nice, and after disabling UAC and getting things tweaked to my preference the OS felt pretty speedy.

However, several "gotchas" cropped up as I continued to use Vista x64.

1) No iPhone support. Nope. Sorry. I had to activate (and sync) my iPhone through an XP Virtual Machine, which was not pretty, or consistently reliable.

2) TERRIBLE drivers from Creative. My Audigy 2 ZS sounds absolutely terrible. All sorts of distortion and so forth. Issues with kernel streaming, crashing to desktop when I switch from 5.1 to 2ch mode while playing a game, you name it. Endless problems here. My Realtek onboard performed overall much better in Vista x64 (and that's sad).

I even ended up breaking out my Chaintech AV710 sound card with its VIA Envy24 chip. This had decent drivers (not perfect, but feature complete with the XP version).

BUT I ran into a nasty little snag with this card and its x64 drivers. About 1 out of 5 times when I boot up, it b0rks my nVidia ethernet, to the point where I get an exclamation in device manager, and the driver does not load. Disabling the Envy24 and rebooting works, then re-enabling (on the fly) the Envy24 works. However, unless the driver loads on startup, its control panel doesn't work! Major MAJOR pain in the ass for someone like me who is constantly adjusting his audio settings

Most of these driver issues aren't really Vista's fault, but they come with the package. My harware + Vista x64 = 🙁

3) A deep hatred for the Vista image viewer. Why? Incorrect colors, and a TERRIBLE scaling algorithm that looks like "nearest neighbor" to me. The XP image viewer was VASTLY superior. An image viewer is supposed to be just that, an image viewer. I don't care if they added simple retouching tools (which destructively, irreversibly alter images as far as I can tell, including an extra JPEG compression cycle... ugh!), I have Photoshop, Lightroom, or Picassa for that.

4) Overall slowness - yes we know it's slower for compute bound tasks and in gaming. The margin isn't significant, but it's there. This is a relatively minor issue for me, but it just feels wrong when my backup PC - a Dell Sempron 3400+ with 1GB of RAM feels faster on the desktop than my main box (see sig)

5) Dodgy user profiles - I had an issue where Vista forgot where my "Documents" folder pointed to. This eventually cleared on its own, but it was very disconcerting

6) Wierdness with the EVR renderer and different video card driver versions, DXVA2 hardware acceleration for HD-DVD etc... It all seems to work just fine on XP

The way I see it, the only thing I loose from going back to 32 bit XP is support for larger amounts of RAM. I had planned on upgrading to 4 GB with my next build, but I think I'll stick with 32 bit XP for awhile. It's simpler, cleaner, and overall a bit faster. I think I can give up the nicer interface from Vista and things like Superfetch and DX10 (at least, until there are cards that can play Crysis at "Very High" at 1920x1200 without issues.

It's been a bumpy road, and honestly there were times when I really liked Vista a whole lot. There are plenty of good things about it, and Microsoft has a solid OS on their hands. It just needs more maturation, and vendors need to get the 64 bit versions of their drivers up to par (CREATIVE and APPLE namely).

I'll give things a try when I get a new graphics card that really makes DX10 pop. Or when I get my next masochistic itch... We'll see.

For now, no thanks.

I agree most of the issues you have are not Vista's fault, can't blame Microsoft for not supporting a competitor ie Apple(email them and tell Apple to get their act together driver wise).

Audigy wise ,well my Audigy 4 works fine in Vista x64 I even bumped the default sound setting up to 24 bit and studio quality ,the free Universal Alchemy wrapper is fine for sound in older D3D games.

Speed wise mine is fast but I do have dual core and 4GB of ram 🙂.
No problems with my Nvidia onboard LAN ,always connected first time when I boot my PC up each day.
42 games installed so far so its getting a good gaming test, plays any 32 bit game so far that I've thrown at it.

I prefer to keep UAC on, extra free security is alwas nice.

I give Vista x64 10/10,btw I have been using it since Jan so bit longer then you 😉.
To be honest I would hate to go back to XP which now seems so old and insecure compared to Vista x64.

Anyway I think you'll find a lot more people happy with Vista x64 then those that are not.

AFAIK there is still no iPhone support for Vista 64, just Vista 32.

Exactly.

And I wouldn't disagree that many of the issues I've experienced on Vista aren't actually Vista's fault - but rather the fault of 3rd parties not getting their drivers written.

I also imagine that with 4 GB of RAM it would be even faster.

I'm really curious about the image viewer though, is this the same behavior that everyone else has?

Thanks

The image viewer issue is indicative of a wrong color profile loaded into the system, it's an easy fix but I don't the the OP cares at this point.

interesting. I figured it was something to do with color profiles - not sure how to fix.

However, that leaves the question about scaling unanswered. Does everyone else have (hideous) nearest neighbor scaling in the image viewer??

Image viewer is great over here. Did you install a monitor driver? That can often instigate craziness. I just let Vista use default monitor drivers.

Vista SHOULD have offered to DL the correct profile for your monitor somewhere during the first round of automatic updates. Did you monitor come with an install CD?

I did install the monitor drivers from BenQ - that might explain it.

Still though, scaling wouldn't be affected by the monitor drivers. And that was plain terrible.

I wouldn't rule that out.

Yeah, it's mostly an issue with iTunes being borked on 64-bit Windows (not just Vista; it's the same in XP 64).

It'll install but the app will report a damaged install every time. It runs and can sync with older iPods (as well as the iPod classic) but the iPod touch and iPhone won't sync at all.

It's also impossible to burn or import CDs, AFAIK.

Hopefully Apple will fix that soon.

Back to topic, I'm personally very happy with Vista 64. If I had drivers for my Line 6 guitar amp modeling hardware I'd finally be able to get rid of my XP partition.

Vista's image view is crap. I have seen it on multiple machines with multiple monitors and video cards. Open an image in irfanview and see the difference.

I like Vista. I was unable to get my SB Live! 5.1 working. I use the onboard sound now.

Been using Vista in one form or another since July 2006! No major issues to report!

the image viewer really surprised me by how much of a de evolution it was over xp. Its more like a seriously nerfed image editor. I've got photoshop and lightroom for that. I just want to view images and have a half decent zooming algorithm. I really don't understand their thought process on this one!

I just switched back from Vista ultimate x64 to XP pro 32 biit today. For very different reasons but overall im really just fed up with vista. In fact the only things i will miss are:

1. Its the latest OS, i like to have the latest thing

2. The show desktop button, which ive discovered as of 2 minutes ago is actually present in XP as well, just enable the "quick launch bar"

3. The way that ctrl+alt+delete will never fail to appear, no matter how badly the misbehaving app wants to hog screen space it cant do it in vista.

4. The interface for sound devices, the thing that pops up when you double click the little speaker in the bottom right, it makes more sense, its the only interface change i actually felt was a positive one in vista.

That is absolutely everything i will miss from vista, i dont really feel those 3.... well 2 things were worth it hogging an extra 400-500mb of ram over XP and causing problems with various programs that would otherwise probably be fine, its not worth the hassle. Im sticking with vista x64 on my desktop rig due to it having 4GB of ram, but if XP-64 had the same following and driver support that vista x64 has i would switch in a second.

no issue's so far with Vista 64 bit here. I do wish microsoft would fix the image viewer to make it the way it was in XP. When I view images and make them large it looks soo bad in vista, was never a problem in XP.

Has anyone tried hacking the XP Picture and Fax viewer into Vista? I think it would be possible, looking at this :

"In the Create Shortcut wizard, type rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen"

So, you just need a copy of shimgvw.dll, and to put it into the Vista System32 folder, then make that shortcut.

Some guru here could probably help on associating that into your default image viewer for Vista. Would be a popular deal, judging from the replies here.
