Switches (or yet another which switch topic)

I've been looking around at switches to expand my home network. While an 8 port switch would do fine, I noticed that CompGeeks has a 16 port rack mountable Asound switch for $84. So, I have two questions:

1> Does anyone have experience with ASound? Should I be afraid, or is this a good deal?
2> Is it okay to use a rack mountable component without a rack (sitting on a surface) or are there thermal issues?
