Switches: Netgear or DLINK?

After about 8 months, my desktop 5 port 10/100 Linksys switch decided to stop working correctly, it's no longer operating at 100mbps, actually closer to about 20. I'm guessing the memory or processor went bad, and it makes 3 out of 4 linksys products I own that broke.

Anyways I'm researching the DLINK and NETGEAR 5 port 10/100 port and I don't see any clear cut differences between them, except a few dollars in difference. What do you guys prefer?

Linksys > DLINK > Netgear - in my opinon

You do know its rare that you'll actualyl get 100Mb/s - you sure your switch is broken, 20Mb/s = 2.5MB/s trasnfer rate, which is not rare if you have low end NICS or self-made cable.

Yep... I borrowed a switch from my roommate and the problem was isolated to the Linksys switch. Took about 2 hrs for me to realize that something on the network is slower than normal, and another hour or so to isolate to the switch.

I'm actually surprised you prefer linksys hehe... The first 2 Linksys wireless routers my friend and I bought went bad within 30 days... Swapped it out w/ Frys and 6 months later, the new one went bad and I had this one swapped out. So between the two people, we had 3 defective wireless routers. I purchased a 5 port switch, worked just fine until it started slowing down... work

The way I troubleshoot stuff is by swapping suspected hardware and seeing if the situation improves... For example, my main comp was crashing very sporatically even after I reinstalled XP. I replaced the PSU and it was fine after that :)

That is a sound diagnostic practice, if you have the parts. I voted netgear, have 3 of the little blue switches or hubs around here, no problems.

Its like comparing dog crap to cat crap but I would take Linksys first, then Netgear, then Dlink last. ;)

Do you have a problem with power surges or heat or something that is damaging your hardware? Even for cheap gear when 3 out of 4 breaks I start to think mabe its something else.

I agreee with your analogy, except that judging by prices, linksys thinks their poodle crap is better;)

Hey there,

Another thumbs up for the NETGEAR !!!!!
I have had linksys stuff go out on me while I still have Netgear NICS, Hubs, and a router that work.
That's a wide range of peripherals to me. Of course I have a D-link NIC once and it worked good too.
It's really up to you. To me D-Link is like the little kid that doesn't get as much attention as the other 2.

It's for a home office and the switch is connected to 3 computers that are always on. I don't have any power surges I know of, and it's surge protected... Unit is next to a window away from direct sunlight, and temps do not rise above 75 or so.. Socal, so not too bad on the humidity...

Wow, I got Linksys to ship me a new unit. It's so funny how I pass by linksys almost every single day =\

I'll keep the new linksys for awhile and see what happens.

(Woohoo, i will have 2 refurbished linksys products soon haha)

It's probably all the same guts inside, but in my experience Netgear product reliability has been good.
