Switched to SMC 7004VWBR router and can't configure it

I hooked the router to my cable modem. Plugged in the router, hooked up my cat5 from my machine and booted the machine. Immediately I'm able to connect to the internet. That's the good news. The bad news is that when I try it configure the router (just to run the basic config, etc), it says there's no cable modem and I lose my internet access. If I power cycle the router and modem my internet comes back but I can seem to complete the router config (using the CD or via the web browser). Any ideas?
 
I remotely manage one of those. Are you using the setup wizard? Don't!
Do advanced configuration via the web browser interface, and forget about the CD. It is a very nice setup to work with, just consider everything you do carefully, before hitting the enable, or submit button.
 
I normally wouldn't have used the CD but the web setup just wasn't working. I upgraded the firmware and now everything is working fine.
