no I'm not crippled and I have tried tons of different settings, but nothing looks good.
I just checked for the 4th time my settings against my friends settings and everything down to font, font size, icon size, resolution, refresh rate, DPI, and color depth are exactly the same. Still his icons and text is bigger and mine is frying my eyes. The only difference at all in our setup is he is using the 910t with a 6800gt using DVI and I am using the 910v, intergraded GeForce4 MX, and 15 pin analog D-Sub.

The closest settings to decent I have found is to increase my icon size from windows default of 32 to 36 and use cleartype fonts. But I'm having issues with the cleartype fonts. When enabled some of the letters in a sentence or long word look greenish.
I'm beginning to think my craptastic onboard video is the problem.

Working on getting some screen shots.

thanks

I gotta great deal on a new Samsung SyncMaster 910v LCD.
I switched from a 17" Proview CRT 800x600 @ 85HRz refresh to the 910v which is 1280x1024 @ 72HRz.
My desktop icons and fonts are eye straining small compared to what I'm used to, but here's the kicker. I have a buddy running a SyncMaster 910t using the DVI connector on his eVGA 6800GT video card running XP pro and nVidia 6.6.9.3 drivers using a font size setting of "normal" and a DPI setting of "normal size (96DPI) and a resolution or 1280x1024 @60HRz. I am using the standard 15 pin D-Sub from my onboard 128MB GeForce 4 MX intergraded GPU, running XP Pro and nVidia 6.6.9.3 drivers, using font size "normal" and DPI of 96. His desktop icons look quite a bit larger then mine and his font size also looks bigger and more easily readable. What I don't understand is if we are using the exact same settings other then him having a better video card and using DVI why is my icons and fonts so much smaller?

Is anyone else using a similar 19"LCD? If so what are your resolution and refresh settings?

I thought a big LCD would be a big step up, but my old 17" CRT was allot easier on my eyes. Could there be a setting somewhere I've overlooked?

thanks for any thoughts or suggestions u may have.

Use large Icons for your desktop. Right click on the taskbar select properties, click on the start menu tab, next to the start menu bullet select customize, then select large icons. click ok/apply, exit.

EDIT: P.S. tune cleartype here

So umm, i just bought an lcd, i'd like to use cleartype, but i'm running 2000, and i'd like to keep it that way. How can it be done on Windows 2000?

It can't. Cleartype is XP only.

phatTweaker - Just use the 120dpi setting under your advanced display settings (on the General tab).

Both pics look perfectly fine... maybe in the monitor menu. Did you use auto adjust?

Hmm. Does ClearType even work right with LCDs when not using a DVI connection? It sounds like you are having horizontal pixel registration errors with your LCD when using the analog VGA inputs, hence you are seeing strange color fringing at the sides. Either that, or you aren't using the right cleartype config. Do the strangely-colored edges go away, if you disable ClearType, and switch to normal Font-smoothing instead?

If you're in the same room, have you tried swapping monitors? Try different combinations of DVI and VGA too. . .

Another thing, not sure if it makes any difference, but a 19" LCD is going to have quite a bit more desktop area than a 19" CRT, so maybe the icons will appear smaller that they actually are. Also, get a high quality vga cable since you can't use DVI, it will make a big difference in display quality.

Cleartype hurts my eyes.

Perhaps the OP has the same problem.

It's not just with monitors, using cleartype fonts on microsoft reader on handheld PCs gives me an instant headache as well ( much prefer mobipocket using standard fonts ).

At a guess as to the difference between the OP's display and friend - it's almost certainly the DVI - try swapping monitors with him and see.

Thanks everyone for all your advice.
I finally threw in the towel and went back to my trusty 17" crt. No more headaches or blurred vision woohoo!
I'm thinking of selling the LCD and getting a large crt.

thanks again

My Desktop PIC
My Friends Desktop PIC

They both look perfectly fine on my screen.

Yeah, I'm not sure what you are talking about...

Clearly its because his buddy has text underlined and he doesnt. Otherwise, they are identical in font/icon size.

Something he may want to try though is switching to the classic start menu. Looks like his buddy is using classic and he is not.
